COME ALONG TO THE BOOK LAUNCH ON FRIDAY 21st JUNE AT THE NEW INN, CLAPHAM, NEAR INGLETON, NORTH YORKSHIRE FROM 1:00pm - 5:00Pm (and in the bar later!). MEET THE EXPEDITION MEMBERS AND HEAR ABOUT THEIR AMAZING ADVENTURE.
This book records the day by day activities of eleven young cavers
who in August 1970 set off on a unique adventure that would
change their lives. Their endeavours were supported by two
distinguished patrons, Brigadier Glennie and Sir Vivian Fuchs. As
the 50th anniversary of the British Speleological Expedition to the
Himalayas approaches, their story has at last been pieced
together from expedition logs as a tribute to the sadly now
incomplete team. It is a remarkable, richly illustrated story that
will both entertain and inspire. The cavers, drawn from the Northern Exploration Group, the Northern Pennine Club and the Red Rose Cave and Pothole Club, drove over 5,000 miles to establish base camp at Arki in the foothills of the Himalayas. The expedition transited Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, crossing the infamous Khyber Pass both ways, a journey now virtually impossible. The star of the show was a Leyland Titan PD2, Registration DRN299, double-decker bus purchased from Preston Corporation. ?Arry?, as the bus was affectionately known, performed magnificently against all odds. Ten tough weeks were spent exploring and surveying caves - the snowy peaks also proved irresistible. The journey home introduced new challenges as the team travelled westwards in intense cold, ice and snow. Maintaining the serviceability of the bus in the extreme conditions became more and more problematic. Would they make it home?
