Northern Spain

Hi all,
Beginning to look into organising a small trip to northern spain. Maybe a long weekend, probably longer.
A longer trip means sailing to santander with the van, which equals a hell of a lot more baggage allowance!
Particularly interested in a Sima Tonio - Cueva Canuela through trip, but I'm here asking to see where i can get any information, descriptions, locations, topos, surveys, recommendations for trips etc (in English, preferably!)

If anyone could provide any information at all, it would be extremely helpful. (also there is a translator role going, pay is in cake and whisky!)

Cheers!
Joe.

Plenty of "tourist trips" around Matienzo.  See Matienzo Caves Project website.
www.matienzocaves.org.uk
Examples: sites 0264 to 0048 Coteron Renada through trip
0333 to 0048 Azpilicueta Renada through trip
0071 Mostajo
Search for caves by length on the web site.  You're bound to find something from the nearly 5000 sites listed.

Hi Joe,

SUSS did our annual summer trip to N Spain this year; carrying out the Tonio-Canuela through trip, as well as a Mortero ? Rubicera exchange and the classic Red del Silencio traverse.

In terms of info I can provide exact details of the kit we took for each trip and surveys/descriptions as well, if you send me your email address I'll forward it all to you.

A trip to the "Fantasmas" in Coventosa? It's not too far from the Matienzo area that Juan mentioned above and there are some extremely impressive formations.

I've found a video showing some of the cave here:

How about a descent of Torca del Carlista (which isn't far from Matienzo) ? a 153-m shaft dropping up into one of the biggest chambers in Europe?

If i can convince the others who wants to go to go in the van for a week, rather than a long weekend, we will be able to fit enough rope in for this! Definitely something to consider working in, thanks!

If you fancy something less taxing try El Soplao. Probably the best ?tourist? cave I?ve visited. Not sure what you can access through the old zinc mine adit on the other side of the hill, but always fancied a return trip.

If you search the South Wales Caving Club Website, there is a Caving folder that has general info on the caves of Cantabria. There is a further link mentioned that should take you to brief descriptions of caves in the area.

The Matienzo website also has some interesting links to an online book on Cantabria caves although the info is in Spanish. Hope this helps.

I'm guessing you may already have done your trip, but I've only just come back onto the forum after a time away. Your post just says "Northern Spain" but if you're looking to venture to the Ainsa area (Aragon, near the french border), I've done a few round there. There's also a book (sorry, it's in spanish but it has maps!)

I've also posted a couple of videos on youtube of me and my dad doing some slightly easier caves in the area, if that area is somewhere you could go. Well worth it and never seen another soul on all but one of my trips!
