Perhaps it's an age thing?  :-\

Although I guess some of those involved with CHECC would probably bridge the age groups.

And on individual universities facebook pages and email addresses, it's quite a closeknit group, but good shout Jane. (I went on the CHECC website earlier today to double check :D )

C'mon Checc, Defend your position, my daughter put up with you for three years, now she has learnt better, and prefers  to deal with proper cavers now!!----

Young Cavers- Beer Swilling from multipacks
'Proper' Cavers- Beer Swilling from Pubs

I know of Many 'Proper' cavers that have been students, Through CHECC they get many opportunities to dig within the UK and Explore abroad with other clubs. Many are now mainstays of British Caving.

I'm a proper caver who once was a student, but I was never like these. I try to keep my clothes on when I'm socialising, for one thing. Though I don't swill beer in pubs either.

Perhaps I did the wrong degree?  :sneaky:

Must admit, a lot of my most enjoyable early caving was with a college club (pre-CHECC), - MCEST - (anyone remember them? - yrammy?), then I met up with TSG and became a 'proper' caver.---

I can of course only speak for my own experience, but some of my most enjoyable caving trips were done at CHECC, nettle pot being a great trip a month after I started caving as a bright eyed fresher, and my favourite Lancashire cave pippikin being equally "enjoyable" a few months after that at NCHECC.

Don't focus on the partying too much, CHECC members last year did all that and then went down Daren.

It's a SUSS 'in joke'

Less than funny

But still I guess more than true, as some of the old SUSS that have joined TSG have bought mountain bikes

This really worries me, TSG stands for Technical Speleological Group, whilst I was with them we tried hard to stick to the ethos of technology, I do hope it is not about to turn into a college club satellite.

Definately not, bograt. There are a few of us working very hard behind the scenes to keep the exploration alive.

Stay tuned for some long awaited projects...

Whilst pumping has largely been done around derbyshire with your generations work on the hillocks knotlow system. There are a couple of sumps that could do with a bit of work, but most are out of reach of generators. One such that might still benifit from pumping with a generator is one in peak cavern showcave, which apparently was still going when the 1st credit crunch drew to a close.

There are a dedicated few that are also having specialist training in persuasion techniques.

I for one am keen to show some of the new people the old school persuasion techniques such as plugs and feathers and hilti capping. As well as one TSG member who told me tonight that he wants to learn bolt climbing, he will certainly get an opportunity to do that, as we've got a project that needs it!

As i said before just a SUSS in joke, if you look at any adult club there are one or two members that do other things. It's just our close relationship with those ...students that means they give us some tongue in cheek comments. But we're 'proper' cavers so we can take it.

As far as I can remember, TSG assets amounted  to;
1 trailer mounted generator- single and three phase.
1 mobile air compressor.
Air leg rock drill.
Wonder if they still have them,  wonder if anyone knows how to use them

I would like to point out that I don't speak for SUSS, and that some of my best friends are TSG members.

I would however stop using the term 'proper' cavers as opposed to student cavers. It's quite rude and often the former are less able than the latter.

As for the in joke, one of the TSG's problems is that it doesn't get many new people into caving and it relies on student cavers joining after university (which I think is a fair statement). Us ex student cavers like to go mountain biking (though not me).

Anyhow, I think the TSG committee should send a representative to CHECC on a fact finding mission. Now we're back on topic.

I was a student caver (BUSS, Birmingham Uni) - I don't feel the need to use the term 'proper' - I was a caver then and am a caver now. I agree, to use the term 'proper' is rude.  Student cavers should be encouraged, they together with other younger cavers are the future of our sport.

Hello CHECC cavers - you're very welcome on ukcaving  (y)

How would this be a problem? Without an influx of young (proper or not so) cavers surely membership of the club will dwindle and then it won't matter what its core values are? Of course, you want to stick to your core values, but surely that's not an issue of recruitment/ex student cavers joining? As Alistair said, its up to old club members to encourage new club members to find new cave!

Student caving has always been 'proper'. A quick read of Beneath the Mountains will tell you that.

We should be supporting CHECC, its brilliant!
