Free rigging gear for UK cave projects

Ukcaving has over 1.5km of 11mm rope to give away thanks to a generous benefactor.

wl
Photo shows just a fraction of the rope on offer

We'd like to help out with any projects that need rope.  We have 150 krabs too.

Your project could be digging, diving, climbing, bolting, you tell us why you need some rope and we'll do our best to help.

All we ask is that you take responsibility for the rope especially in terms of safety and conservation

Tell us about your project and we'll take it from there.  No strings attached

Awesome, thanks to those who have organised this.

Shame it's 4 weeks late for our big HOG Mine project, but we'll definitely keep this offer in mind when we start our next one!

Sounds good.

That said I would be loathe to trust my life to  safety critical kit I did not know the history of.  Is the gear new or used?, what is its history?, is the history documented?

Pretty much every time I go climbing, caving, diving, etc. etc. I trust my life to safety critical gear that I don't know the history of.

Every fixed line I've ever used, all the bolts I've ever clipped to  all the equipment my climbing partner carries, many's the time I've borrowed a regulator or stab vest from a diving partner.

I find that I trust myself to give a visual inspection to these items. Surely that's what most people do.

Many thanks to ukCaving for supplying over 280m of brand spanking new, fully certified, straight out of the box, 11mm rope that is now rigged in the Rowter Hole extensions beyond the Ice Cream Trail and soon to be permanently rigged down the Eldon Hole West route.

We should be grateful that some organisations are happy to support the caving community without having their name plastered all over the place.

Can we have another 100m to permanently rig the North route of Eldon Hole as well please to help the digging project?

That looks like nice rope.

Can I get a name (PM is fine if they don't want publicity). I don't have a project, and others that need this rope should get it, but I will be after some soon for our general use, and I'd like to know what that is to compare it to my usual Marlowe 10.5mm.

Thanks Mark.  To echo the above, the rope is new, unused, clean, inspected, legit and certified.  It is a very common, tried and tested 11mm rope.  It is labelled and anyone who receives some will know exactly what it is.  Great to see UK caving projects getting support when often it is only expeditions who benefit from this sort of thing.

Dear all

Thanks for all the requests so far.  They all look worthy to me.  I hope there will be plenty of rope to go around.  I probably won't respond to these requests until the middle of the week but I have them all logged.  Thanks for your patience.

If anything left we could do with 30m of rope to climb into the roof of Goyden 3 to look for high level series

This would be great for replacing some of the fixed hand lines in the dales. some fixed lines in fall pot (ease gill) , mud hall (GG) and other lines like in Hagg gyll, calf holes, BPOW.

I currently have a diving project in gaping Gill that could do with some rope. Inbetween the bottom of bar and the bottom of flood there is the scafolded hole which you step over - this drops  down to a pitch series leading to lost river chamber where there is a couple of sumps. I'm currently diving one of these sumps, and it's currently at -36m in large phreatic passage, which is clearly the main  passage of the water from fell beck to inglebrough cave, via deep well. Due to the depth and seriousness of this sump the next dive will need a considerable amount of equipment, so I'd like to permanently rig the pitch series  in order to make things easier in the future. It would require about 100m of rope and maybe 15 Krabs. Any help you guys could offer would go a long way.

See an article in decent called "finding the lost river" about 4 months ago for more details.

Many of the anchors are shot. I'm not sure that there would be any point unless all the anchors were replaced with resin anchors at the same time. And are the karabiners steel of aluminium alloy? I certainly wouldn't like to use aluminum alloy karabiners as permanent fixtures.

If you manage to drain the sump, you can have mine :)

Hi all

I've received about 20 requests for the rope so far and I shall be in touch with people shortly.  At this stage we are not offering the rope to replace fixed aids in caves although I appreciate these can be very useful.  It is intended to help people out on a UK caving project.  'Project' with a reasonably broad scope.  We feel that people rigging rope in caves for a project will be obliged to look after them in terms of removing them when worn out or when the project comes to an end.  It is difficult to get people to take a long term responsibility for fixed aids and consequently some end up in very poor condition.

Cheers
