BCA will be actively supporting this event and will be block booking a number of delegate places at the current reduced rate (valid until 31st October). The intention is that UK cavers can register for the event via BCA and pay in GBP's (at the reduced rate) even after the 31st October. We are still working out the fine detail for this, and I will provide updates as I have them. You can register your interest in the event from now, by emailing: membership@british-caving.org.uk with Vercors 2008 in the subject line.

From a personal perspective, I know that the French are really good at organising these events. Anyone who attended the Speleovision caving film events at La Chapelle-en-Vercors in 2000 and 2002 will know just what a great experience they can be. So, if you are thinking of planning a caving holiday in Europe next year, why not plan to include a week in the Vercors - it's a spectacular area with some great caving.

Note to Sam/Bubba:

There are several threads on this topic (I counted at least three when I did a search) in various places on the forum. Is is possible to combine them?

I'm intending on dragging a load of the Dachstein crowd down to the Vercors straight after our exped next summer so will plan the dates accordingly.  I've heard on the grapevine that about twenty caves will be rigged for the week, including the Berger, but not sure how accurate this is.  Regardless, a week of croissants, French girls, and Yop will be much appreciated.  Or Danup.  Never known which I prefer....

Nevertheless, it might be worth some of the other expedition crews planning their trips around this as I suspect it'll be a right laugh.

Hi

Does anyone have any information on the dates the caves will be rigged from or any system of regulating access while they are rigged?

I?m hoping to get a group to go to the area in August but I?m not sure if you need to register or log in to use the pre rigged caves. There isn?t much info on this on the Vercor 08 website.

One assumes you just turn up at the desired entrance with SRT kit and a light although Berger might get a bit busy if that?s the case.

Looks like a great opportunity though.

Cheers, RB

Hi RB,

Went to the French National Congress in Narbonne a couple of years ago and they just left the caves rigged for a couple of weeks either side of the conference, you didn't have to book-in or anything. Don't know if it will be the same in the Vercors although I would have thought it might be a bit more regulated - isn't there some sort of insurance requirement for the Berger?

Suggest you keep checking the website for further info, August is a long way off.

Cheers,
Nig

The caves that will be rigged are listed here:

http://vercors2008.eu/training.htm#subsection32

Rigging info and topo's are to be posted at some point.

For info: Travers?e des Anciens (r?seau Christian Gathier) is a through trip, but you really need to understand the Christian Gathier/Scialet du Brudour end of the system if you don't want to be rescued...

The latest information that I have is that the caves will be ready on the evening of Friday August 22nd and will be derigged on the 30th of August.

Access: My understanding is that if you have registered in advance (via BCA for example) then you will be covered by the congress insurance from the 23rd to the 30th of August. Every congress attendee that wishes to go caving in the pre-rigged caves must register for every different cave he/she wants to do at the Explo-Speleo stand where they will be issued with a badge/pass. If someone is not registered and they have an accident, they will not be covered by insurance and any costs (from rescue etc,) would do legally pursued. Goufre Berger - there will be control of badges at the entrance because of the official obligation of registration for the Berger.

Cheers,

Glenn

At some point rigging information and topo's will be posted.

I know that most will be based in the north of the Vercors this year, but, if anyone is going to be based in the south (around La Chapelle) from 14th August onwards maybe you could let me know.

Hi all,

Any hints on how to actually register via the Vercors site? A member of our club is trying to register his partner as a non-caver. However when trying to register on line it took us to a  v. dodgy unsecured site - (http not https) and was given the message that a maximum number of attempts of been exceeded and then "Malheureusement votre paiement n'a pas pu ?tre pris en compte."

Looks like we're a bit stumped - has anyone else had these difficulties?

Cheers, R

Olivier Vidal has this morning sent me a provisional programme for Vercors 2008. It's in PDF format so I can't post it here, and I assume that most people who have registered already a copy via e-mail. However, if you'd like a copy and don't have one, you can download it from http://www.vercors2008.eu/program.pdf

Nick.

Glenn

I have just emailed every one who has registered for Vercors 2008 via BCA with instructions on registering at the event, and attaching the provisional programme and an insurance application (the French Federation have negotiated a special deal on insurance for those attending and restricting their activities to the caves and canyons rigged by the various French teams. It costs ?4 per person and covers the Congress and any previous camps). You must have insurance to descend the caves rigged as part of the conference and ?4 is a really good deal. However, if you are taking out cover via the "BCA's holiday caving" cover, you should take a copy of the policy with you.

If anyone does not receive the above mentioned email (and thinks they should), then please let me know at membership@british-caving.org.uk, although you will not get a reply before Monday 21st July as I will be in the Vercors from tomorrow onwards.

Cheers,

Glenn
