Closure of A4118 Gower Road near Penmaen

Does anyone have any more details on the closure of this road yesterday?

It is near the Oxwich turn-off and the entrance to Perriswood Archery and is on limestone and oolite. It was reported as being due to a cavity below the road surface. A local was quoted as saying ?The whole area has been affected by sink holes for years - the ground has been moving around here for decades. I had a sink hole on my land in the 60s which would have been big enough to fit a double-decker bus in. In the last ten years, I?ve had two much smaller sink holes. On this occasion, the actual road has been affected."

There are a number of sites on the Cambrian Cave registry near here.

According to the council, these type of voids are quite common and are generally down to localised ground water erosion of the limestone.
- from an update on the hole "the size of three terraced houses" found under a sagging section of road (so not (yet) a 'sinkhole'): https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/local-news/sinkhole-size-three-houses-found-19031657

It would be interesting to know if the hole is actually into the limestone, or in the overlying glacial till...

It is in the limestone, is karst related, and is likely to be filled in at great expense soon. A certain well known Welsh digger is looking after speleological interests as well as possible in current circumstances.
