Only people I know who used wire for caving is some of the Russian groups. Once remember seeing a descender (homemade probably!) that a chap who'd caved out in the Ukraine had been given as a memento.

I'm not sure if it's an approved thing to do, but Petzl jammers should work OK on wire rope of the appropriate diameter... I've done it.

But don't blame me if it all goes horribly wrong. :?

Thanks for the comments. Not intended for caving, have an access problem that needs a solution. Builders left a wire cable, fully suaged and ticketed but with no clear instruction as to how or what its intented purpose was to be. Definitely some kind of self protection method, but with what? Mystery!

Oh in that case dont mess with trying to make things work together that are not designed. Rig a proper rope to what ever the wire rope is rigged onto.

Presumably this type of thing:
http://www.safesite.co.uk/catalogue/cabloc.php
http://www.safesite.co.uk/product_detail.php?id=58&SectionID=12

http://www.latchways.com/vertical.html

and finally for today...

http://www.harconservices.co.uk/product.htm

all seem designed to work with an 8mm stainless steel cable.

Dismissed that as any ropes we leave out get very tatty very quickly, but thanks all the same.

The Cabloc looks like the bunny! Thanks.
