The Nant Llammarch valley that is passed over on the way to Gellifelen and the usual parking spot for Ogof Clogwyn in the Clydach Gorge was recently marred by some scumbags that felt it was a good place to flytip some beds and bags of rubbish. It is not an easy place to get to and Brynmawr Caving Club was asked if we could help out to get down into the valley and clear the rubbish. Costain, the contractor for the dualling of the A465 through the Clydach Gorge, was asked if they could help out and they were glad to, providing a truck to take away the rubbish and two of the workforce gave up their time to come and assist.
Jane Pratt, local county councilor, arranged for the road to be closed to allow us to undertake the clearance safely, and so it was arranged for us to get down into the valley last Sunday.
We gathered early on the Sunday morning, and an SRT line was rigged to reach some carpet that had snagged halfway down a rockface and a handline was rigged to get down via a steep slope into the bottom of the valley. It was then a matter of gathering the rubbish into builder's sacks and hauling them to the top. The beds and mattresses caused more of a problem due to the weight but these were soon hauled up too.
The Monmouthshire Environmental health officer was on hand to go through the rubbish and we believe that she has found evidence that points to the perpetrators.

We then managed a quick caving trip afterwards to show some of our newer members the delights of Craig a Ffynnon.  ;)
So all in all a good day that I think showed that local caving clubs are willing to help out with local issues and I know it has been appreciated by the local community.
