Cave Rocks & Minerals - natural history book needed

I have seen  a lot of caving books and own a few but I would like to find a book that I have been looking for ages.
I don't know if such book exists but surely it does...

A book with the history of how/when/what/which rocks and minerals form in caves. Stalactites, stalagmites, cave pearls, curtain formations  etc etc...

Something like Wikipedia but on a book. Anyone knows where to find such book?

We have got one of those in our club library. We can't be the only club to have one. did you want a copy for yourself, or just one to look at?

Best by far is Cave Minerals of the World, by Carol Hill & Paolo Forti. Expensive but worth it.

If you cannot find it in your club's library, copies of the first edition at least, by Carol only, can be found on Abebooks.

Thansk everyone

Why did I ask this in the first place?!!! This is now the most expense item on my wishlist!!!!

Fortunately (for me) and unfortunately (for my visa card) both books mentioned here seem to be what I am after and I am more tempted with Cave Minerals of the World, by Carol Hill & Paolo Forti which seems to be (of course) the most expensive of the lot.

I had also seen this one somewhere when I did a search a while ago
http://www.stevensimpsonbooks.com/si/001974.html  anyone seen it?

Being a big book worm I am not after the book to just have a look. I really want to have it! I am starting to save now and will hopefully find a "cheaper" second hand one somewhere....

And a bit out of the Caving context has anyone read this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Granite-Grit-Walkers-Geology-Mountains/dp/071123180X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313267832&sr=8-1  It's very cheap comparing to other factual books but seems interesting enough...

I am a bit doubtfull of ordering from the States....

Last time I ordered a book from there I paid ?15 for the book plus ?15 for p&p & customs.

Has anyone ordered from Speleobooks before? what was the postage like?

Postage from the US of A can be dire, yes, but not always. However, Emily, who runs Speleobooks is very nice and very helpful and if you contact her via her website then I am sure she'll be able to tell you the relevant figures in advance of an order being placed.

Cave Minerals of the World is available from the publisher NSS for US$45

http://nssbookstore.org/index.php?mode=store&submode=showitem&itemnumber=07-0011-1981

The "Cave Geology" 2007 title looks comprehensive.
http://nssbookstore.org/index.php?mode=store&submode=showitem&itemnumber=01-0609

Also their "On Station" second edition title for everything cave surveying published recently in April 2011 also looks interesting.
http://nssbookstore.org/index.php?mode=store&submode=showitem&itemnumber=07-0009

I have a request into NSS for shipping a couple of books to York, waiting for an email quote.
If there are others interested in ordering this Title or any others from the NSS bookstore then perhaps there is scope for a combined order and distribute at HE, York or Dales ???

PM me if you are interested.

It is worth checking Speleo Projects as well. They have lots of caving books and will bring them to Hidden Earth if you ask them.

http://www.speleoprojects.com/html/en/main_home.html

I notice they currently have:
Cave Minerals of the World for ?45
Encyclopedia of Caves for ?105
Cave Geology by Arthur N. Palmer, 2007 for ?36

If you can avoid postage then these are pretty good prices. I don't know what postage is but it will be from Switzerland (which is a bit nearer than the USA) although they have obviously already been shipped from the USA to Switzerland and I guess that will be reflected in the price.

NSS have just quoted me $40 to ship three books weighing 12lbs (5.45kg in new money). So about ?8 per book for shipping. There is a USPS flat rate international large box for up to 20lbs weight, about five books, for $58.50.

Obviously prefer to get books from anyone willing to put a stand at HE !

If SpeleoProjects can offer similar pricing and bring the books to HE for pickup then definitely the way to go.

Les are they coming to hidden Earth that would save some postage - I might have a couple of books not listed as well
