Top 10 most wanted - Ingleton, Yorkshire

Hello fellow cavers.

CavefestUK are compiling a list of the 10 most wanted to visit caves near Ingleton.
We are looking for suggestions as to which routes/caves to pre rig for our event next year in the Ingleton area. We have our own ideas, but we value yours more.
We have taken a look at the Eurospeleo 2016 site and the list there is comprehensive to say the least, and to pick 10 to start with seemed quite a task.
So, we call upon the knowledgeable community in which we enjoy our passion of caving to help us create this list. Please leave your suggestions, and reasons why maybe, below.
We look forward to reading your comments.

Gaping Gill system (obviously) would be the immediate suggestion. Multi-entrance trips with huge variety; longer trips into the remoter parts of the system also possible. It may still be dry in June, before the usual summer deluge, so assorted variants on Main Shaft could be enjoyed.

You'll need some wet weather options in case of rain and some good forecasting at the event so visiting cavers can be well informed on what is doable and what isn't.

Keep in mind that it is quite a lot of volunteer work to rig in advance and then derig caves after.  You may want to consider rigging just a very few caves, such as a couple of through trips, but have the rigging topos available on site for cavers to do their own rigging to suit their abilities and weather.

Gaping Ghyll caves get rigged up at both winch meets in Spring and Summer so I wouldn't rig those again.

Perhaps a couple of ropes down Lancaster Hole.
County Pot
Swinsto and Simpsons and KMC
Tatham Wife

Good luck

I agree with needing some wet weather options as a lot of the trips are not so weather proof. Also consider that (officially speaking) several of the caves require a permit, access details for all the caves are on the CNCC website.

Problem is rigging enough routes for the numbers of cavers you expect, in the time available. Eurospeleo was over a week & some pots were rigged for almost 3 weeks, making it worth putting the effort in.

I agree with all Badlad's points. Systems where both sides need rigging to provide a through trip would be most appreciated - Diccan / Alum / Long Churn; Short Drop / Gavel; Rift / Long Kin East etc.

Kingsdale is good for having a lot of variety close together for different levels of ability/enthusiasm.

To echo some of the above, sticking mainly to the multi-entrance (route) theme.. some of the below can be undertaken in wet weather, always worth having those options.
Alum - Diccan - Long Churn.
Long Kin East- Rift Pot.
Simpson's - Swinsto - Valley (KMC).
Lost John's Cave (Monastery / Dome and Valhalla) or maybe also Boxhead (exchange or head through to Notts2)
Notts Pot (rig a couple of routes if you want just a string trip)
Lancaster Hole - County Pot - Pool Sink.
Gaping Gill system (maybe Stream / Flood or Bar)

Second that, also Death's Head?
When Eurospeleo was on, two of us did the DH - Lost John's trip, which was brilliant as it would ordinarily never get off the ground as an exchange, as it needs a combination of reasonable weather and 6ish (ideally) people to carry all the gear.

I would add Sell Gill Holes, an enjoyable exchange trip that can be done in moderately wet weather. I wouldn't think it is worthwhile rigging Swinsto or Simpsons, as they are both such excellent pull throughs. Roof Tunnel Pitch obviously does need rigging though.

Thank you for this everyone. Its all very useful information.  Having only been to Yorkshire once to visit the area and never caved there, it helps me enormously

For the more challenging trip then perhaps King pot, but you will have to have a no pie eaters allowed (or tall people) rule for the T-shaped rift in there. Otherwise its a cracking trip.

If you want a more Wales style of a trip don't forget about Ease gill, if you can organise a guides for it you can have cracking through trips and a relatively wet weather trip, i.e. Lanc to county high level route.

Most of the ones i would have suggested have been but add Shuttleworth Pot to the list the formations down there are great and its doable in wet weather.

How tall is too tall for king pot ?

When I did it there were a couple of six-footers with us, they did it OK.

Don't put a leg down the T. It doesn't help
