a companion book is also available:

THE MINES OF SOUTH WESTERN SCOTLAND by Tony Oldham 2005.  35 pp, 5 surveys cum location maps, 18 colour photos including colour front and rear covers.  The mines of south-western Scotland are virtually unknown to most of the inhabitants of England and Wales.  In many ways it is a lost and forgotten area.  An area of wild beauty, noted more for its agriculture and scenery than for its industries.  It has never been of great importance as a centre of mining; nevertheless the scattered occurrences of metalliferous ores that have been worked from time to time are relatively poorly covered in literature.  The two main works by G V Wilson (1921) and James R Foster-Smith (1967) are long out of print and difficult to obtain.  This present work hopes to overcome this problem by recording those deposits, which are known to exist, and which have been worked or investigated in past times.  There is no active mining in the area at present, though some small-scale mining continued as late as 1954. Laminated covers.  ?7.50

SECRETS OF THE ICE AGE / The World of the Cave Artists by Evan Hadingham 1980  342 pp  many photos of cave paintings etc.  The author throws new light onto the Ice Age way of life.  First he starts with a reappraisal of the much-maligned Neanderthals and then describes how hunting bands, a few strong, would annually follow for hundreds of miles the migration of vast reindeer herds: how craftsman fashioned increasingly diverse tools and ornaments; and how the hunter-artist seems to have developed a society far more affluent and peaceable than the `cave-man? image suggests. SPELEOLOGICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SOUTH ASIA by Daniel Gebauer et al. 1995  ii + 226 pp 2509 entries 20 illus.  This bibliography is intended to be a caving device rather than a collector's item.  This book provides hints to unexplored caving areas.  Because many of the references are from obscure sources, they are backed up with annotations.  A separate chapter is dedicated to man-made caves etc.  Concerning Tibet and Nepal, a number of cave relevant and often ancient texts in Tibetan and Nepali language and scripts, which have remained obscure, were brought to the speleological world by co-operating with scholars of cultural history.  Finally, a few pages deal with early Himalayan cave friends like Bharo `Maimed Hand' Jnanakiti (1016-1060) and Jets?n Milarepa (1052-1135).  SB ?24.00

I have finally moved into my new house, it is very small, barely larger than a rabbit hutch.  It is piled to the roof with boxes of caving books.  The only way to get from one side of the room from the other is to crawl beneath the boxes.  It is so precarious that Bent Gear and Dud Gear refused to follow me.  I had to hand tea and biscuits out through a window and we all had tea on the lawn.  But I digress.  I really need to shift some books.  No reasonable offer refused, postage extra
