Skipton Museum is undergoing  major redevelopment and modernisation and as part of this hope to have a whole section devoted to and celebrating our regional heritage of caves and cave exploration.

We have been asked to assist with this.. and hence this broader appeal to our fraternity past and present, for caving equipment through the decades....

As part of the display we hope, will be a sequence of manikins dressed as cavers through from the pre-war years up to and through the  60's 80's and present.

Amongst anything else you may have.....
Helmets, Clothing, boots, lamps, bags, Ex Army/WD surplus, ammo boxes, ropes, hemp ladders, wire ladders, SRT rope and rigs, diving kit, old caving guidebooks etc.... in fact anything caving related that you might think would  be useful...

If it is precious memorabilia then it could be loaned to the museum.

If you can, or know of others who could participate and contribute in this very needed project please let me know.

Skipton as the "Gateway to the Dales" presents a unique opportunity to showcase our passion.

Richard.

Excellent idea Richard - whenever I've been to Wookey I've always recognised the interest that their diving equipment display holds, both for tourists and for the caving community generally. What you're proposing should work well in a place like Skipton.

In fact - this will be doubly useful. From time to time I get asked by (ahem) "senior" cavers if I know of anyone who would like their old (in some cases very old) gear. If your equipment archive goes ahead there will then be somewhere to point them at.

Go for it!

Hi Richard

I have an excellent condition Ecrin Roc helmet that can be donated, probably some other gear too (fig 8 , fibre pile undersuit, petzl duo, etc)

Have you got a drop off point anywhere ?

Ian

Thank you Pitlamp for sharing in the enthusiasm for the caving showcase.
It has definitely got a green light to go ahead from everyone concerned, which is excellent news.

Thank you Mikem for that example from Mendip.

Ian, Thank you..... That is absolutely superb.... I have sent you a PM

I heard on the grapevine that you sent Ian a PM to say that his gear is more modern than most Molywarps kit and you have a better use for it than Skipton Museum.

Bernies in Ingleton has had a showcase of 'antique' caving gear (which I remember well) for many years and it is still there under the new management.

  Excellent!

But you could have said that about me - equally appropriately.

Richard I will donate an original red Petzl (first in the country) ?piss pot? helmet that follows directly on from Texolex. An Oldham lamp in good condition to go with this and the oldest home made ladder I can find in the garage.

It will mean I cant go digging on Wed night - but its for a good cause.

Most of my kit probably falls into this category. If you PM me I should be able to donate something.

Thank you for the generous and excellent responses.....

Forgive me for not getting back to each of you immediately, believe me this is not due to lack of gratitude or urgency, it just that we need to give a thought to offsetting duplication....

Richard.

You might put out a Wanted List on here and tick things off as they come in like pitlamp has done in reverse with the legacy......

PS Pitlamp I think the NPC has a old Neil Robertson stretcher in Greenclose - it might have gone back into the loft if it has not been skipped. Might be worth asking next time you are up there. I looked like an instrument of torture......easy to spot.

I've some old climbing rope - if that is any good

Plus somewhere there should be a troll leg loop harness (to go with battery belt) and a Joe Brown helmet

Hi Richard I have a bag full of stinky type carbide lamps if they're of use I should also have a "modern" petzl carbide headset and one of Jrats Indian carbide generators can also supply an FX2 lamp and headset and or kirby tube lamp and a caving supplies Protex type helmet. Can swap a knackered old ecrin for Ian ps nice new one!

Good point Blackshiver; I think that Neil Rob stretcher is still kicking about. It would have to be OK'd by the committee though - so you might like to send a quick message to our Secretary, so she can put it on the agenda for the October meeting?
