The annual caving quiz took place to a packed room at "The Centre of the Universe " last night. Your quizmaster Martin Grass ( seen standing centre ) put together 60 head-scratching questions on caving on Mendip with sections on the UK and abroad. I think it fair to say that the oldies outsmarted the youngsters merely due to the fact that they do more reading about caving rather than doing it. Our group " The Fossils "comprised four very old people and two nice young ladies. We came a commendable third. We did well on the photo section getting six out of ten cave entrances. We got Reads Cavern and a very difficult one of Totty Pot only because Martin's dog was there and we know it's on his usual walk. Same for Draycot Cave. Whilst we got Sidcot Swallet we failed to recognise Goatchurch. Martin sneaked in Spar Cave a sea cave in Scotland which confounded most of us. The questions were interesting but getting dates correct and cave lengths to within a 100m proved difficult. What year did Floyd Collins get trapped? What year was the MRO formed? Hardest of all was the bonus point question for Neil Moss's full name. One person got 5 points for that. Identifying caves by feature names was fun. Where is Swildon's Rift ? ( Got that one ), The Little Man? ( Got that one ). I should have known Blasted Bastard and Clitoris Crawl but forgot. ( Priddy Green Sink ). Oh Swildon's Rift is in Baker's Pit and The Little Man Reads in Devon. Yup a good night out and a chance to meet up with folk.
