The 16th Sinkhole Conference: Call for Abstracts and Registration

The Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst, generally called ?The Sinkhole Conference,? is the longest-running international conference of its type. Since 1984, engineers, geologists, hydrologists, land managers, biologists, and many others have gathered at these meetings to exchange cutting-edge information on karst and its many benefits and challenges.

The call for abstracts is now open for the 16th Sinkhole Conference. Abstracts may be submitted until 15 July 2019, after which will be the time to submit your papers to accompany your abstracts. The papers of past Sinkhole Conferences have made those proceedings highly sought and widely cited. We expect the proceedings of the upcoming meeting will be the best yet.

The 16th Sinkhole Conference will occur on 20-24 April 2020 in fabulous San Juan, Puerto Rico! Puerto Rico offers a tropical karst landscape and a vibrant historical and cultural venue unlike anything seen in rest of the United States. Many people are already talking about attending the conference as part of a vacation, and we are helping to make that possible.

The conference will be held in the lovely Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel, located in the historic heart of the city. Unlike previous conferences, your registration will include your breakfasts and lunches, in addition to the other usual amenities. Also, your discount conference room rates will extend to three days before and after the conference, in case you want to stay longer and enjoy a vacation.

The 16th Sinkhole Conference: Beck Student Scholarship Call for Applications

The Sinkhole Conference was created in 1984 and led for many years by Dr. Barry Beck. In his memory, the conference now offers the Beck Student Scholarship. Students awarded a Beck Scholarship will receive free registration to the conference and up to $1,000 reimbursement for travel expenses, as well as certain special recognitions and other benefits. Carlsbad Caverns National Park Student Paleontology Internship Available

The US National Park Service is recruiting a 12-week paleontology intern position at Carlsbad Caverns National Park to assist with a paleontological resource inventory at the park.  The position will start on September 15, 2019 and extend for 12 weeks.  The park will provide housing for the intern. HydroKarst 2019 ? XII Training Course on Karst Hydrogeology: Spain

This course will take place in Malaga, Spain, on 21-22 September 2019 in conjunction with the International Association of Hydrogeologists Congress (see announcement below). During thiscourse, researchers will have the opportunity

New Book: Eurokarst 2018, Besan?on

Catherine Bertrand, Sophie Denimal, Marc Steinman and Philippe Renard have compiled selected papers from the EuroKarst 2018 conference to produce Eurokarst 2018, Besan?on: Advances in the Hydrogeology of Karst and Carbonate Reservoirs. New Issue of Peshchery (Caves) Available

?eshchery (Caves): ?ollection of scientific transactions, 2018, Issue 41, 210 pages, is now available. This contains papers from the conference "Underground spaces: methods of studying, monitoring, protection and use", which was held jointly with the II Congress of the Russian Union of Cavers and the meeting of the Association of Cavers of the Urals.

It includes 22 scientific articles on the history of the study of caves, their geology, speleotherapy, biospeleology, etc. A number of articles are devoted to the study of artificial underground spaces, monitoring and protection of caves. The results of studies of the caves of the Perm Region (The Kungur Ice Cave, The Divya Cave), the Chelyabinsk Region (The Solomennaia Cave) and the Republic of Bashkortosan (The Shulgan-Tash Cave) are presented. The results of studies of artificial underground spaces of the Balaklava region, the Belgorod region are also presented.

Information about periodicals, books reviews about karst and speleology, karst and caves bibliography of 2017 is published here. The ?Chronicle? section contains reports about the 2018 International Workshop on Ice Caves, II Congress of the Russian Speleologists Union, the Symposium ?KARST-2018,? and also the articles devoted to the 70th anniversary of the Kungur laboratory-stationary of the Mining Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Virginia Cave Week runs from 2-9 June 2019 and promotes an understanding of Virginia's caves and the surrounding limestone habitats known as karst. 13th Balkan Cavers Camp: Turkey

Dear Caver Friends,

Since September 2002, the Balkan Speleological Union (BSU) has united thousands of cavers from 12 different countries with the spirit of cooperation and friendship. Inspired by this environment, The Balkan Cavers Camp of BSU was first organized in 2007. Over the years, it has become one of the prominent events in the caving community, anticipated with excitement by cavers from many nations.

Now, on behalf of the BSU, the Turkish Federation of Speleology is pleased to invite you to take part in the 13th Balkan Cavers Camp, which will be held in Antalya, Turkey, from 2nd to 8th of September 2019.

Antalya is a town located on the Mediterranean coast of Southern Turkey. It is a popular holiday destination where the visitors will find many tourist attractions including the old town for shopping and nightlife, nearby beaches, museums, and ancient cities just a few hours away. The camp space of the event will be on Lara Beach, one of the famous beaches in Antalya where you can enjoy the sea.

In addition, the area is characterized by the most remarkable and important karstic topography in Turkey, the Taurus Mountains, with a long history of speleological exploration. The geographical location of the event will allow many spectacular excursions, which will be ongoing throughout the event.
