OK, taken a few months to summon up the courage to post this.  Which is best original or a cover?  I'll start with Jenny Morris (original), vs. Belinda Carlisle (cover)

There we are, comments welcome.

'Sound of Silence'....Simon and Garfunkel/Disturbed.

Both excellent, just very different....

I'll take the Sisters of Mercy's version of "Gimme Shelter" over the Stones' original any day, though I also rather prefer Mr. Eldritch's take on "Jolene" to the way Dolly  did it!

Tom Jones DELILAH versus the lunacy of the cover by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

Big SAHB fan here. A superb live band, still play ?SAHB Stories? regularly.

My vote goes to Hendrix' version of Dylan's ?All Along The Watchtower?.

And "Like a Rolling Stone".

I would vote for Joe Cocker's version of The Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends",

Yay! Sisters rule!  I rather like Emma (original was by Hot Chocolate, believe it or not), love the photos in the version below.  On a similar vein (pun intended) the Mission's version of 'Dream On' is rather good.

House of the Rising Sun - Bob Dylan/The Animals, different but both very good!
Neither were original though Simon. It's an old folk song, a version also recorded by Woody Guthrie in the 1940s.

Yes I did know, but my mistake, thought it was one of the first times it'd been recorded, didn't know it had prior - esp by Guthrie. He got a bit of stick for it, Dylan, didn't he, but then when The Animals made it a big hit the joke was on him.

Gary Clark Jr's version of The Beatles' Come Together

Ignore the OTT music video and crank the volume up...

I actually quite like Paloma Faith's version of the Mama Cass song 'Make Your Own Kind of Music' of the Mamas and Papas fame, even if it is rather cheesily (if that's a word) applied to a skoda advert. So more likely to buy the song over the car.  It does have a an adventurous sort of theme.

One of the best reasons to go caving that I can see, well listen to as well. Scandinavia meets America's finest.

Hurt by Johnny Cash.  Nine Inch Nails did the original, Johnny's version is simply sublime.

So many contenders...
My *current* favourite is the Primus cover of Candyman from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. Yes, really, and this is probably best not to show children unless you are good with them having some pretty funky dreams. I don't think anything Les Claypool touches is less than decent, but his stuff definitely an acquired taste.
