Very unexpected.

Been digging footings to extend onto the end of our house. We had to get a mini digger with a breaker because of the solid limestone.

We were cleaning the last bit of trench out by hand, dug the pick in to loosen a rock and this appeared

John came up for a look

The building inspector is due in the morning, not quite sure what he will make of this

It drops into a reasonable sized open natural passage, which is almost immediately blocked with rubble from a hole in the roof, somewhere under the slab, in the background, in the last picture.

What is interesting is, just round the corner of the house, is a drainpipe which disappears into the ground. I think when the house was built in the mid 1700s they found this hole and used it.

We are going to dig into the top of the hole in the roof tomorrow

Cool. Let us know how you get on! Maybe cover it with some concrete lintels, but keep it open otherwise?

What worries me if the building inspector sees it ,will be fill it with concrete or no extension !
Is it on CROW land ?

Be careful with your digging, that you don't start a run-in that takes your house with it!

Though if the house has been there since 1750 you should be OK.

Will the entrance end up inside or outside of your new extension?

Hope you can extend it and find another entrance further away from the building before you have to fill it, dread to think of the expense and delay this is going to cause.
Good job you're married to a caver! (y)

If the entrance ends up being inside the extension, does this mean those persons with a chronic allergy to gates will be attempting to remove Mark's front door? :-\
