throwaway oversuits

My nephew is going to the dales for a week and fancys having a go at caving with a couple of mates who have done some. They intend doing 3 or 4 easy trips and he's thinking of getting one of those cheapo oversuits - £7.95 at Caving Supplies.
Does anybody know if they are any good? I imagine at that price they would fall apart on the first trip. Are they waterproof at all? What material are they made of? It says on CS's website they are pvc but if they are why the disparity in price between them and a "proper" pvc oversuit?

Sound like "overgreenies" to me. They'll last a few novice trips, mate of mine converted his into a very fetching split skirt on the way out of Draenen one time but they're not as crap as you may expect. I'd say a good bet for a novice who's giving caving a go. Certainly better than the "old waterproofs" approach, and probably cheaper.

Anna, few (if any) caving suits are waterproof - the main reasons for wearing overalls underground are a) they protect your own clothing to a degree from rips and abrasion and b) a one-piece suit stops your clothing from rolling up if you slide/squeeze downhill. If they are likely to get soaking and cold while underground then it might be as well to shell out a few more shillings and go to Lidl/Asda and get a £20 wetsuit.

What your nephew intends sounds fine and at £8 for four trips pretty cheap too, even if he does end up throwing it away afterwards.

One thing worth mentioning to them if they're not aware of it already is to check the weather forecast before they go!

One of our club members got a £19.95 shortie wetsuit at ASDA and it looks fabulous to me (mind you she is a girly and women always look great in wetsuits; well, to me they do... perhaps I've just got a "thing" about neoprene and female shapes). No complaints about it from the owner (the wetsuit, not the way I look at her).

I'll tell my nephew to check out Asda's wetsuits - omitting the reason you rate them!

There was I thinking the guys always preferred the women cavers to be in yellow pvc. I'm beginning to realize where I've been going wrong.........

If they are the "overgreenies" then they are fine. A kind of PVC chemical suit sold as PPE for farmers/chemical plant workers etc. Hence slightly odd sizing but I use one for digging and its done multiple gritty shithole trips with no problem.

Cap'n'cris. i too have a thing for women in wetsuits. I used to think you couldn't go wrong, and then went diving at Stoney Cove and saw a whale .
See also women in dry suits, women in caving suits... and in fact an awfully large percentage of the human, female, population of the planet

You're right, Cave Troll. Similar happened at a SCUBA try-a-dive session. Even after a potentially fatal amount of alcohol I couldn't find the slightest stirring of interest in whale-intimidators.

It's only going to get worse, I'm afraid; there's not a single classroom group at Primary Schools now where there isn't at least one morbidly obese sweat-factory.

A long, long time ago a young lady from Oxford "popped" out of her un-zipped wetsuit (she was obviously unaware of the "underware" thread) on Fountains Fell. Fearing she may get frostbite, a friendly chap from a London University club dashed to her assistance and promptly put the popped bits back in. We never saw her again for some reason......

Before I was married I took the very attractive young lady who used to milk the cattle at a local farm on the Short Round trip in Swildons (local to me not to Swildons). I lent her my wetsuit which fitted her snugly (I always do the round trip in a furry anyway).
Once we left the main streamway I became a little concerned that a couple of the male members of my group appeared to be fighting over their positions in the group at the crawls. I sent the more sensible one to lead, the other to the rear of the group, and we set off again. At the next crawl I found out why they were fighting. My wetsuit had parted company in the crotch area, affording a perfect view of transparent white knickers.
She enjoyed the trip, but I could never take her again, as I didn't have the heart to tell her about the incident, and my mates surely would have.

I have a very fetching greenie makes you look like a certain type of cotraception which is good for looking at women in wet suits.

Near to a motorcycle accessory shop? Pop in and ask about one piece waterproofs, in last years colours, in odd sizes, or shop soiled. Some excellent bargains to be had from "Gizzus a couple a quid" to "take it away from here now, please." Good bits of kit that will do several trips or diiging sessions on the cheap.

Try looking on e bay. I have seen some cheap wet suits on there and infact was going to buy one until I managed to aquire a Gull Wetsuit which I now use. The wetsuit on there were new and going for about 20 quid and that way you do not even have to go shopping in Lidl or Asda!!!

Watch out for ripping the inside thigh/crotch on the edges of ladders, electrons especially...
A friend was well chuffed with his Lidl 'motorcycle oversuit' cost him next to bugger all...
... three rungs down the entrance shaft... shred!
