The yorkshire dales will always be the mecca

'Robbie Shone is a Photographer who specialises in adventure photography. Robbie lives in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales which is home to Britain's biggest caves.'

Just visited robbies site which i was most impressed with, but i was confused with the above welcome message on the home page, you guys may have the deepest natural shaft and the largest cave entrance and a few long systems, but i doubt it equals what we've got in wharfedale valley let alone the whole of the dales.

GB you say Les  :-\

That would'nt happen to house the largest chamber in the UK by any slight chance.

GB Cavern?... isn't that in the Mendips, in Southern England, where they have the largest underground chamber in Britain?

That caver on the Titan documentary/visit said there was a rivalry between Yorkshire & Derbyshire... do you think he has heard of caves further south?  :-\

I think you'll find there is a general concensus among people who live north of Birmingham that "there are no proper caves down south".

Hang on, I think we're misquoting the original thread; the person interviewed (was it Robbie Shone or Moose) was only quoted as saying that there is rivalry between D'shire and Y'shire and this is entirely correct. However, recognising that there is indeed rivalry between D'shire and Y'shire is not the same as stating that no other regions exist or count as worthy caving destinations. We're presuming that the person quoted is anti-everywhere-else.

Yorkshire is a great caving region and if you live there, great.

Same goes for Derbyshire.

Same goes for South Wales.

Same goes for Mendip.

Same goes for Forest of Dean.

Shame about Devon.  ;)

I would agree with with Damian, although I can't decide between Wales and Yorkshire. Wales has the longest (controversial) and deepest caves, longest trip from entrance, great formations. However Yorkshire has a higher quantity of quality caves, and deep pitches.
However I have never caved in Derbyshire or North Wales, so I cannot properly comment  :spank:

Also What about the Forest of Dean!!!!

I'd say south wales's next in line after yorkshire.

I'd say caving's what you make it wherever you are. In the last eighteen months or so I've enjoyed GB and Shatter Cave as part of the Hidden Earth pre-conference thing (thanks Les!), plenty of stuff in S. Wales, stuff like Juniper Gulf, Pen y Ghent, Easegill in Yorkshire and digging/diving/tourist trips in Derbyshire. All very different! I'd have thought some of the most knowledgeable and capable cavers will have experience in plenty of areas in the UK and abroad.

In terms of the friendliness of the cavers I have met, I rate the regions as this:

1. South Wales - always welcomed without exception
2. Mendip - usually friendly, but sometimes a bit parochial and cliquey - weird sense of humour too. :)
3. Derbyshire - limited experience here, but generally great guys.
4. Yorkshire - some great guys, but a few damn rude and arrogant people too.

Also like to add that the mine explorer community seems to be very open and I have always mixed very well with all groups regardless of region.
