Snelslow Swallet - Access Restored

Friday the 13th is not normally the day you expect to get good news but the Derbyshire Caving Association are giving you all an early Christmas present.

It has been confirmed today (in the last hour) that access to Snelslow Swallet on Peakshill Farm land has been officially granted!
Access conditions are exactly the same as for Giant's Hole, i.e. park in designated area and pay the ?3pp fee. Close all gates you pass through and make sure you use the designated access route only.
The main route through the short cave has been resin bolted, but the surface shaft has not yet. This will be done next year when the weather improves.
Do note that the rainfall catchment for Snelslow is as large as P8 and Giant's combined.

DCA will update the cave registry with the new access details and the rigging guide / route map in the next couple of days. https://peakdistrictcaving.info/home/the-caves/castleton/snelslow-swallet

Please note that Christmas Swallet is still NO access, and we must continue to observe that or we might jeopardise all the hard work that has gone into reopening Snelslow.

Thanks so much to all the people who have helped get us to this stage, it is great to be able to give the gift of another new venue for you all to enjoy.
Merry Christmas from the DCA team!

Hi Pete,
Excellent work. What is the story with the surface shaft? Is this likely to be added to the rigging guide? Is the surface shaft officially accessible?

Surface shaft is included in the access, but there are no anchors to use yet. DCA will install anchors but it will not be until the weather warms up a bit in the new year.

Another question. Is there any plan to put resin anchors on the dig pitch heading downwards off the side of the base of the main pitch? The one described in CotPD as being 10m deep and choked at the bottom.

Yes, at the same time as the shaft gets done. We had an anchor and time shortage back when the main route was done.

We had a visit to Snelslow Swallett today. Well-done on the bolting etc. A short but interesting and enjoyable caving trip.
