Browns Folly Quarry / Mine - ongoing deliberate destruction

Reccently there has been another well funded and planned attack on this site. The perps are not novices.

Yes, that is a turd spray painted, and litter has been tagged as "This is a can / not a can" The loose debris has gathered together as far as possible.

Clapham Junction is a complete mess. There is paint of all colours all over the place. Same with the picnic area. The paint in these two areas is so bad it is not going to be cleaned up this time is what I have been told. In CJ it is every other rock that is painted, every wall, huge rocks tipped out into the middle (which are now back where they belong!) its simply horrible. It resembles more of a chess board and a skateboard park now than an old working mine. Pretty much all the history is now gone. From historic graffiti to tin ware and tools. Saw sharpening benches are being destroyed at an alarming rate and are having to be buried to protect what is left of them.

They also like pulling down walls too. The recent attack saw front passage filled with rocks so high you could walk from one side of the high wall to the other over the passage way! They are not there now though.

The only real thing that needs tidying up now is this paint. If you were to choose to do this you would need a very strong scraper, ie an old chisel or similar, a wire brush, a small hammer and possibly even some mud to wash the stubborn paint over with. I can tell you now though that there is days and days of effort needed for this the paint to be removed.

This is being done by a highly organised and well funded group who are experience underground and have been doing it for years with gradually more serious damage, now including deliberate destruction of original history features durign their "events."

Viewers should in no doubt it is nothing to do with random young novices, and in fact nearly everyone else who goes in this quarry has been behaving very well indeed over the last year.

I do not know if the link will be left active for long, there are also some pics of the deeds in action on the trolling site "Brians Folly" on FB https://www.facebook.com/briansfolly/

NOTE: I assume the names scrawled on the walls are almost certainly trolling of those people...

Sealing, or closing the quarry is not a simple option, there are many entrances on different owners land, including self opening gulls.
The site is a bat roost of international importance.
For cavers / mine explorers to even contemplate blocking of access seems a very sad outcome.

Our sadly unavailable friend Peter Burgess has written elsewhere:
No matter what you think of what is going on, the character assassination and persecution of an individual is totally unacceptable, cowardly, and is NOT a game. Sadly, if this does end in tragedy, those responsible will probably have little remorse and probably never understand what they did. Stand up to bullies, stand alongside the bullied. Such behaviour is becoming more prevalent as those with hate in their hearts become more and more emboldened by the climate they see around them.  :(

Costructively, what can we do to identify those responsible and reach a satisfactory conclusion?
Motion sensitive cameras have been tried, but these have been sought out and stolen at significant cost

There is no solution to this sort of nonsense, apart from rounding everyone up and killing them, or sealing the place.

This WILL escalate to the point that something really outrageous happens. Start thinking traps, broken glass, poo, etc. Of course, at the real end of it is a fight where someone gets really messed up.

I take an exceedingly dim view of people locking places up (in the name of their superiority). I'm also tired of this bat nonsense. There are another group of tossers exercising their control and command (in the name of bats). IMO and perhaps flying in the face of accepted wisdom, I do not consider them to be endangered. Perhaps they were once, I see loads of them. I merely see the whole bat thing as an excuse for one group of people to command another. This whole attitude grinds my gears in a major way.

I haven't been in Browns yet. I'd like to, purely to take in the history/geology/atmosphere of the place and I'd rather not bump into someone else's locks, have to track down a BCA body to be chaperoned around the place, I'd also rather not bump into someone's building efforts, modern grafitti or modern rubbish.

This is a turf war, it's clearly well on the way to being totally sour and since both sides are really unwilling to back down, it will conclude in a nasty way. Sadly, it's time to lock it up for a decade or so. Either that or both sides need to have a pitched battle.

I'm aware of another set of idiots engaged in a bit of a turf war/grudge match and it's got to the stage of 60m high traverse line being fiddled with so that the user (other party) has a nasty fall. This is another thing that won't stop until someone gets almost beaten to death, or falls down a shaft.

I have finally come to the landowner's/authorities point of view. Forget this petty nonsense, just seal it up. If these twits cannot control themselves, let them have their battle above ground.

Yup. Seal it for a generation.

Chris.

It's all very well saying seal it for a generation, but some of us locals visit quite frequently, why should we lose something we enjoy and treasure, because a few tossers can't behave themselves?

You lot are the casualties in what appears to be a war between two sets of extremists. Or, if you word it differently, some autistic territorial nutjob and a load of feral scum looking for a fight.

Brian isn't going to stop and as long as he doesn't, they won't either. It will escalate until a couple of them attack Brian like hyenas on an old lion.

The authorities will get involved and immediately reach for the biggest tool in the toolbox. If anyone pokes that particular tiger with a stick, the fallout, given the recent pacing/roaring could be more extensive than the immediate area.

I do not want fallout from these clowns fucking my pastime up.

To blame the caretaker for the outrageous damage to this site and the personal attacks is a vile case of victim shaming. When they have wrecked this site beyond repair and driven the bats off, and the place is sealed, what will you do when they move on to you and your Cornish sites? The far SW is already extremely anti mine explorer, activities being vey hush hush and secret, or N Wales where turf wars are rife already? The mines inspectorate are already flexing their new powers and may well jump against any venue that is in any way not natural. We could let the trolls and bully boys win, but I didnt have you down as spineless in the face of a challenge

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out?
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out?
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out?
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me?and there was no one left to speak for me.

I disagree. The SW is very open, but cliquey in the extreme. I'm quite happy to drag anyone out with me and answer whatever queries people have, which is what I enjoy doing and what the hobby should be about.

There are some very insular and hostile groups. They share one thing with each other. They all think they are better than everyone else and as a result, think they are the princes of access. It's very very silly. There is much fuckwittery and to an outsider, it must look like a load of toddlers being very silly indeed. That's without lighting the fuse of the mine rescue nonsense again.

We have our own idiots down here and pretty much everyone is up to their necks in one kind of battle or another. The bottom line is how far you are prepared to take it. As I mentioned, we've already had our rigging set to fail. What happens next?

Your use of the words "Victim Shaming" is a bit excessive. Whilst I'm sure Brian's intentions are good, what the hell is he doing fucking around in there so much? It's not his site! Building walls and tossing around is a little bit OTT. Let's inject a pinch of salt into the proceedings here. This lot of people messing the place up are doing it solely because he's there. If he wasn't there, they'd go and jerk off somewhere else. It's pretty much bored hood-rats.

It's certainly time to drag the owners into this to inject some sense before someone gets fucked up and the tiger gets let out of the cage. I 'm in a good mind to email the AWT, purely because this is basically fuckwittery in the extreme on both sides and if it's allowed to continue, the consequences will almost certainly be newsworthy.

You can pick a side here, but it strikes me that they are both wrong.

Mr Bridger would round them up and drive them into the sea.

Bored hood rats? No, well experienced and committed, prepared to pay out significant sums for their fun.
This damage was ongoing before the caretaker decided to pick up litter, clean up graf and try to protect delicate historical features. Rebuilding stacked deads to original specs was derided, access to the Restore depot was regularly forced, and many of the vandals assume it is their right to continue to do so. Passages have been cleared of fallen deads and walls built to safeguard various features.
Reccently the quarry was essentially free of modern paint and litter and debris from destroyed pack walls. No longer.
The fault lies soley with the vandals
AWT and Hobhouse are well aware of the issues, and frankly CBA to do anything... Sealing the site would not be effective and serve to allow the criminal vandals to work on breaking into Restore in peace, unchallenged

If AWT dont do anything, someone from their senior management will be saying "lessons will be learned"

If  (when) someone does get injured AWT senior management are going to be standing in court answering some embarrassing questions!

Like most senior management I do not think the reality has entered their brain cell!

A couple of points from an occasional visitor to Browns. Firstly I took a party down there a couple of years ago and was really impressed by the clean up in there, to see it be destroyed like this is really sad but I cannot see how on earth it could be construed as Brian's fault. OK some of the stuff he's done like Clapham Junction is OTT, but it is purely these louts who are destroying it just because they can't have it all their own way.
Secondly has anyone actually contacted AWT about this? If not they could say they didn't know perhaps? Mind you they are contrary buggers to speak to.
Thirdly if someone messed with rigging in such a way as to make it dangerous surely that it attempted murder and the police should be called.
