I started in the mid 70s with a site helmet bought from the local builders' merchant, and a metal bike lamp strapped to it. My first trips were with a friend into old mine adits in Cornwall, closely followed by old sand mines closer to home. I ended up joining a club a few years later after some publicity in the local press.
I would never have dreamt of going alone or without a helmet!
I know people who started caving wearing bobble hats and carrying torches. They didn't know about caving clubs and how to join them
