Just recived the following e-mail

Hello, guys!
Just wanted to inform you that a new world record in the depth of caves was established several days ago in Voronja-Krubera cave in Arabika massif, Abkhazia, Western Caucasus. Several cavers dived through sump on the depth of ¨C 1400 meters, and underground river led them to the next sump on the depth, which they describe as was at least ¨C 1800 meters from the surface. There are some photos from the expo available here http://speleolog.ru/news/8/

Cheers,

Vladimir

Anyone heard anything else?

no - but sounds impressive.

Got this from google (http://www.cavinguk.co.uk/book/index.php?chapter=14)

Currently, the record is held by Voronja (Krubera) Cave in Gorgia, Asia, at a depth of 1710 metres, although this seems certain to change, probably even before this book goes to print.

So cant be too long before -2000 is met

Yes Sam,

In January 2001, the expedition of the Ukrainian Speleological Association
explored Krubera (Voronja) cave in Arabika to a record-breaking depth of
1710m. Full report (in English) at http://www.cavediggers.com/Voronja.pdf

From my rudementary Russian, for this new breakthrough:
These cavers were mostley from the NoMos (New Moscow Speleoklub) and CAVEX clubs, although there were about 30 in all. They first entered the cave on the 13th July.
They passed through a sump at -1400m and were camping on the other side. They were just making one last push after suffering in the camp at -1720m when they broke though and followed a river channel down to the sump at around -1800m. They surveyed on the way out, but have not accurately processed the data yet. They didn't look into any of the side passages in the latest extension.

I'm sure the Russians will provide a much better and fuller translation in due course.

Hm, which one the several expeds to Peru this year would that be? The one I'm on (in September) only has 1000m depth potential...
