Title: Standard 'New to Caving' post!
Post by: drawtagnan on June 23, 2017, 07:22:07 am
Hey everyone I'm Rebs  :) I've been wanting to do a proper caving trip for most of my life, after hearing my dad's tales from his younger spelunking days. I'm based in Northamptonshire, but happy to drive further afield. I've done some climbing before, and explored Giants in the peaks before, this is my only experience. Was hoping you lovely lot could give me some pointers on where to start ;D

I also belong to a group of snowboarders that have expressed an interest, so any advice on how to get a group of beginners started would be most welcome.

Cheers, Rebs :)

An old post says there used to be a club in Northampton, but not sure what your nearest one is now, it does however still have useful advice:

(although caving.uk.com doesn't exist anymore)

Maybe someone here could direct you: http://www.thepinnaclecentre.co.uk/page/caving (http://www.thepinnaclecentre.co.uk/page/caving)

There's a brand new website launched - http://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?topic=22137.0 (http://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?topic=22137.0) with plenty of tips.

For a group of you it might be worth hiring a guide for a trip or two and see how many want to take it further.

I think my dad was involeved with the Northants group but thinks it isn't going now. OK cool, I climb at pinnacle, I'll ask if they know of any caving groups that climb there, do cavers and climbers tend to go hand in hand?

Yes I'm super keen to get stuck in, I feel it calling me! Can you recommend any good guides?

Simon Becks (http://simonbeck.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/mossdale-exploration-group.html)  has got a great way with words, definitely worth a read.

Useful guide books

'Northern Caves 1, 2 and 3' are the classics for the Dales but both out of print and I imagine you will be rather looking at the Derbyshire Dales, which is not my stomping ground.

The CNCC have started an excellent resource on their website for the Dales

Dales Cave Descriptions (https://cncc.org.uk/caving/descriptions/)

This Iain Baker book  (https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Caves-Peak-District-Barker/dp/186126058X)is good.  I have a copy of that you can have if you like, got my name on it and seen a few muddy fingers over the years mind.

Beneath the Mountains by David Rose and Richard Gregson (http://www.oucc.org.uk/btm/beneath.htm) is certainly worth a read when you have a few days spare.

and I think this website is probably already on your radar!
