PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION!!

Inglesport were delighted with the result of last year's photographic competition so have asked if we can run it again!

Would you like to see one of your cave photographs printed and displayed in pride of place in Inglesport cafe and win a £100 Inglesport voucher (sponsored by UKC)??

Enter your shots on this thread.  A shortlist will be compiled and UKC forum members asked to 'like' their favourites.

The winning shot will receive a £100 Inglesport voucher + have their photograph printed by Inglesport.  Second and third place will also be printed.  After 12 months on display the winners can take their photograph to hang at home.

Competition open to any caver resident in the UK.
Max 3 entries per person.
Entries in by 10pm 19th July 2019.
Shortlisted entries will be posted 22nd July - voting (liking) will close 28th July.
The theme of this year's competition is EQUIPMENT (Inglesport do after all sell quite a lot of it!). Photographs taken at any time are eligible - so carbide lamps, rope ladders and wooly jumpers can feature  ;D
A brief (or not so brief, tell us more) description of where the photograph was taken is required.
Please post photographs at a reasonable size on the thread so can be easily viewed, however you will need the original in a high enough resolution to print successfully.

After some serious consideration (and consent gathering), I dug through my personal archives to find the most spectacular photo I have of a caver's equipment on display during expedition...

Deflowered Chamber, Bill Series, Flowerpot, Tresviso. A discovery made by the subject of the photograph.

Unfortunately I’ve got a couple of more serious photos to enter than the above effort.

First is a photo with plenty of equipment going on, harnesses with cowstails being used via Ferrata style to keep punters on the bridge, helmets and obviously various flashguns scattered around. This is the second river crossing inside Hang Son Doong, Vietnam.

The second is a photo from the Vietnam expeditions team trip across the border into Laos in January this year. This virgin passage features not one but two Petzl Classique bags, a staple of all cavers kit stores for many years.

Thanks for entering, Josh - for a while I was dreading Topino winning with his shot  :o :o

Topimo - you have two more entries allowed, anything more suitable for a cafe wall??

Thanks both for entering and supporting the forum's competitions

Hmmm, it appears "equipment" is a tricky theme for me... I'll keep looking through but for now you'll have to wait with a "lack of equipment" entry:

Katie Eavis climbing old ladders out of the Moorwood Sough in Derbyshire. To get here you have to wade for ~60 minutes through water waist deep, so when reaching these ladders your body is often numb with cold. Not ideal conditions to then attempt this climb, especially if your mind is still very alert to the dangers!

Lots of equipment in use down Rowter Hole this weekend.

The culmination of several weekends of preparation and trials saw us pumping out Rowter Hole Sump. A report of the trips will appear here and/or in Descent soon.

Hi Cave Photographers, by 'equipment' we mean what you're wearing underground, SRT/ladders, photography, digging, diving etc.  It's an Inglesport competition (with £100 voucher sponsored by UKC) -  if you have a decent photo of something Inglesport sell, why not enter - though cakes don't count but a flask of tea underground would  ;D

Good luck

I think it would be hard to take a photo of a person underground without featuring something Inglesport sells.

I really like this photo (possibly because it is one out of hundreds which isn't blurry for once!).  I probably like it because it is on the way to a favourite trip of mine, but with fell runners, cavers and hikers in the same shot, that covers a few of the Inglesport sales arenas.
However it isn't underground and I don't have a high res version for large scale printing so not really eligible, but I like to get involved  :-[

Some great entries so far.

Please remember that the theme this year is EQUIPMENT, so a brief description of what is being used would be ideal. Rigging, SRT gear, ladders, dive gear, pulleys, photography and lighting, rescue equipment?? Would be nice to get some older entries of long retired equipment & lighting from days gone by.

Closing date for entries 19th July - Good luck!

Great Oxbow Passage, OFD.  To get here we had to do a series of climbs.  Mark sports a nice AV oversuit.  At the end of the series we used a wire ladder and life line to descend Skyhook Pitch, whilst Caver Keith was using his new Fenix lights to light the pitch for filming.

We're going back a bit here.

This is a picture of Mike Farnworth about to descend the first 170-metre stage of a 246-metre shaft in April 1973. He's sporting an Oldham headlamp and battery pack; a Texelex helmet, a modified climbing harness, and two figure of eight descenders. His equipment bag is army surplus canvass. He is not sporting anything as modern as a cowstail. The two descenders will allow him to overcome a rebelay about 40 metres down. He will need to lock off his descender on the doubled hawser-laid top rope, thread his second descender on the lower rope; lock that one off; and then undo his descender from the top rope. But quite frankly, the locking off the second section wasn't really necessary as you needed the strength of Atlas to force the double rope through the descender.

The ascent was made on Clog ascenders - which one needed to detach from everything to pass a rebelay.

A cave diver needs equipment - the best he can get hold of. And these days the explorer carries a lot! No, we don't have sights like this in the UK but its in Britain that all the skills are honed. And you don't have to look far to see what incredible feats have been achieved.

I am relatively new to the forum since I mostly just read rather than post stuff.

Have recently been caving in Ireland, and I was informed by Jane Allen there is a photo competition, so might well share a couple of better ones.

1. A close-up shot of some formations in Marble Ache cave, along the Legnabrocky Way. Featuring half set of caving equipment - warmbac oversuit, a headlight, and a helmet

2. Full body shot in the JCP passage of Shannon cave. Featuring full set of caving equipment - warmbac oversuit, a headlight, a helmet, wellies, gloves, knee pads.

3. Polltullyard, the 33m entrance shaft to Shannon cave. Featuring the rope work. (Might not be relevant for the topic of the competition. Though could not been seen clearly, one will need a full set of SRT kits to do it.)

New to the underground photography scene, but here are a couple of pictures I may as well enter from my first two shoots underground, playing around with different equipment whilst Kent University and Oxford University were over!

Image 1 – ‘Warmth’ – Virgin Circuit Passage, Boho Caves, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland – Here we see a caver lighting the candle of another, allowing for them to explore and view the formations within the cave.

Image 2 – Legnabrocky Way, Marble Arch Caves, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland – Here we see Elif from Kent University taking in the formations through the final crawl section of the Legnabrocky Way. I particularly enjoy how the flash has nicely bounced off the ‘Moon Milk’ behind.

Image 3 – Virgin Circuit Passage, Boho Caves, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland – Here we see two cavers taking a short break whilst the faffing of photography takes place! Nicely kitted out for this short horizontal cave system!

If you are ever interested in coming over to Northern Ireland to cave, please do not hesitate to give me a message and I can organise meeting up. There is plenty of accommodation, including the brilliant Hoo cavers hut! A must stay when in Fermanagh.

On behalf of ZombieCake who is too busy to post right now...

Series of photos taken to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the MCG a few years ago showcasing the equipment from each of the decades that the group has been in existence.  Recreation is from roughly the middle of each decade.  Photos were all taken in the same location in Swildons Hole.  The photos were edited to give the feel of the photographic media in use at the time...

1950s with boiler suit, texolex helmet, hemp/ash ladder, premier carbide lamp.

1960s with Goon suit (yes it is a real one) electron ladder, NiFe cell.

1970s wet suit, Oldham lamp, plastic helmet.

1980s plastic oversuit, expedition carbide lamp, early SRT kit with Jumars (note these were taken from the current SRT kit of one of our members) and JB fibreglass helmet (also still in regular use)

1990s TSA oversuit, Speleotechnics FX3 lamp and fibreglass helmet, Petzl SRT rig

2000s, Warmbac cordura oversuit, Speleotechnics Headlite with 7 LEDs, Petzl Ecrin helmet.

Hi Gardouth, I don’t want to sound sanctimonious or preachy . . . but ‘when I were a lad’ I used to climb short ladders without a lifeline . . . until  I met someone who had fallen off a ladder on Valley Entrance pitch (actually, I think the ladder broke) and had never walked since.

NB: theyorkshireminer – love your GG picture.

Fulk; what is not visible in Gary's second picture is that I am clipped into the ladder via a karabiner on my main mallion. The ladder itself is backed up with slings. Obviously, there's still scope for the ladder to snap so this is by no means the right approach to ladder safety and you are right to highlight that ladders should always have a separate independent belay... good practice should always prevail.
For Gary's first photo, the model is clipped into the separately belayed rope... although via a belt which of course is not intended or rated for this purpose... so yes, bad practice  :spank:

Anyway, let's not let this thread turn into a discussion on ladder safety...  ;D
