Title: Northern Explorers' Forum 2019
Post by: CNCC on January 21, 2019, 09:58:39 pm
(https://cncc.org.uk/newsview/images/1548107423.jpg)

A day of lectures from diggers and explorers in the northern England regions.

We would like to make cavers aware of this excellent event being organised in our region for Sunday 7th April 2019 in Claphan Village Hall. A website has just been made available with some details and a list of lectures (which at the time of writing this news article is only a very preliminary list, we recommend you check back closer to the time for more details).

https://northernexplorersforum.org.uk (https://northernexplorersforum.org.uk)

We recommend getting your tickets soon as the venue has a limited capacity.

The CNCC is proud to be underwriting the venue costs for this event.

Just attempted to pay but after confirming I got an error message saying "Sorry, things don't appear to be working at the moment".

So I don't know if I've paid or not!

But I certainly want to join in - could someone involved please look at whether this Paypal thing is actually functioning and whether my payment got through?

I will sign up when they have sorted the website issue. P.s. Fantastic choice of a Sunday, for me it means I can go caving on Saturday as no one ever wants to cave on a Sunday.

Hello Sam, like others I've had no success in buying tickets either using my Paypal account or credit card on both tablet & PC.

The payment part is entirely handled by PayPal so should work. Please can someone describe the problem? At what point does it fail?

Hi Gary, Paying by debit card, it collects all the card details (card no, expiry, CVV etc) then your address and lets you click to proceed. It then either hangs or comes back with a message along the lines of "Your payment cannot be processed at this time, please try later."

That's what happened to me yesterday. When I tried again this morning it went straight to a log in screen asking me to log into "my" (?) Paypal account.

Worked OK for me from my laptop just a few minutes ago via PayPal.

My PayPal account is set up for 'PayPal OneTouch' on this laptop - don't know if that makes any difference?

Just received an email receipt for the payment.

Cheers

I'll let you when it is resolved. Apologies to anyone who has problems with this.

On the plus side it keeps it at the top of the board!

Hello Sam, I used the "Manage" option in Paypal to update my credit card details and was then able to purchase.

Just tried again - it lets me enter all the details and then when I confirm it just gives me the same "Sorry we're having trouble at the moment" type message. Then it goes to a Paypal login page (which is only viable if one has a Paypal account).

Normally when I pay with Paypal, beneath the big login panel there's a rather inconspicuous button saying "pay with credit card" or something similar, which allows you to pay with your credit card without having or creating a Paypal account. Then when you finish paying there's a screen asking you to create an account, and, again, an inconspicuous button saying "not now".

Not certain if it's worked for me or not it shows a cursor for a while and then just asks me to enter my details again.... No error message, but no confirmation message either. But I think it's only those with a paypal account that it works for.  Can someone check my name is down? I will Pm my full name.

Worked for me ok on 22nd Jan.

Which did you use though, an existing Paypal account or attempt to pay by debit/credit card as a Paypal "guest"? From what has been said above, I think that there are some circumstances in which it works and others in which it doesn't.

Sorry, should have said. I used an existing Paypal account. Guess it shows it work for some, some of the time. Still needs a fix or just keep trying.
Title: Re: Northern Explorers' Forum 2019

Well that was a rigmarole! I got it to work using internet exploder only the link on Northern explorers web-page just takes you to the main pay pal site, not the paypal checkout page.

However I got around that by copying the link I had in Chrome on the pay bit into explorer and it worked finally!

So it looks like it's Chrome that is not working, when no paypal account.

I have detailed the steps I took here, it should help others:

1) Open up the northern explorers forum in your normal browser (Chrome or whatever you have been trying it with) and click the "buy tickets" button.
2) Don't bother entering any details, select everything in the address bar (the https:\\... text) at the top and press Ctrl + C.
3) Open internet explorer and paste that address into the address bar there by selecting the text and pressing Ctrl + V
4) Fill in the details now and press pay and hopefully the bloody thing will work.

Please pass this on to your mates who are having trouble.

.......  So it looks like it's Chrome that is not working, when no paypal account.

Doesn't work on Firefox either. I got round it by reactivating an old (ancient!) Paypal account, updating its password, checking it worked by buying something on EBay, switching to Northern Explorers Forum and going into Buy Tickets, resetting the Paypal password (to the one set above) yet again, and then paying. And BINGO! - I've now bought my seat.

So it can be done - just Quaking is easier.

After some work with Paypal it should now work with a guest checkout. However, cookies need to be cleared first and depending on the device it still may not work. There are several people who I know are having problems and I'll arrange an alternative payment method.

Please PM me if it doesn't work for you. I'm away next week so you may not get a response immediately.

Andy I'm pleased that you are so determined to come.

Ahh that will explain why it worked in Exploder as it would not share the cookies with Chrome.

Is the payment process completely fixed yet? Using Firefox and credit card as guest, I'm just getting the "We're sorry, things don't seem to be working at the moment" message reported above. I've left it a good while before booking to give time for the problems to be sorted, but we're getting close to the date now.

Is there any other way I can book/pay? I can bring cash to CNCC meeting on Sat if that helps!

Could someone who can get it to work book two places for me and I'll give you the money?

What, are you being serious? Of course people still use Linux - its a perfectly acceptable modern operating system. In fact the majority of web servers run on some form of Unix variant and Linux has a bigger market share of desktop computers than you might of thought.

I was being a bit flippant mainly because Kay was having a go at me for not being a mind-reader when I was only trying to help. It was also a bit of a joke did no one get the Deamons bit (Linux uses them instead of services as far as I understand).

I barely ever hear of anyone using them as desktop computers now and looking at the global market share it's a couple percent share which is not increasing, so in my view they are rather obsolete.  I am aware web servers tend to run on unix but that's a different kettle of fish as we are talking desktops now and also we are royally derailing this thread.

Small market share != obsolete

Most webservers these days will run Linux distos such as Redhat and Fedora, rather than bare Unix.  Android too is a slightly modified version of Linux. Linux is far from obsolete.

Out of the 70 Devs in my office, I'd say 50% run linux on their work laptop (usually Ubuntu) and I suspect that's not unusual for a technology company. More people run Linux on their machines than you think!

Clearly payments have been an issue for several people. I'm not sure why really. Once you go to pay, the payment process is entirely handled by PayPal.

I'm surprised because although PayPal can be a pain it usually works reasonably well. PayPal was used really just for it's quick implementation but if NEF is repeated in future years we'll sort something better. I would usually use Stripe so we'll probably go down that route next time.

Hopefully everyone who wants tickets gets one despite the problems. I'm sure Sam will help anyone if you contact him.

Please note that there are now a limited number of tickets remaining. If you haven't been in touch but would like to come please do so ASAP if PayPal isn't working for you or it isn't the way you wish to pay. Numbers are limited due to the size of the venue.

If it works correctly you should be able to pay by credit card/debit card and not use a paypal account, there is an option on there for it.

Sorry, I should have said thanks for trying to be helpful. But it's not asking you to be a mindreader to realise that Apple has a good share of the market, and if someone hasn't tried using IE when their favourite browser has failed, it probably means they don't have IE available.

This email has been sent to everyone who I have an email address for who has a ticket.
Dear Attendee,
This is a reminder that the Northern Explorers' Forum is to take place on Sunday 7th at Clapham village hall doors open at 9am.

Can I ask that you bring a mug or cup with you for drinking tea (Yorkshire) or coffee (instant) which will be provided.

Lunch will consist of:
Selection of sandwiches (ham, beef, cheese savoury, egg mayo)
Sausage rolls
Crisps
Cheese and onion quiches for veggies
Selection of cakes and tray bakes

If you aren't able to eat this for whatever reason please bring your own lunch.

There are over 100 people attending can I therefore ask that you all, where possible share a lift into the village and then ensure that you park responsibly. There is a large national park car park in the village that charges. Please don't ignore local signs about parking in any part of Clapham around the church and outside peoples homes.

If you are planning on breakfasting in at the bunk barn in Clapham can you please let them know in advance so they can ensure they have enough food.

Many thanks
Sam Allshorn

The Northern Explorers' Forum took place today. A cracking event with some excellent presentations. There was talk of doing something similar in a couple of years or so; I really hope this happens.

I'd certainly like to thank Sam Allshorn for shouldering much of the work of making it happen and all the people who gave their time to entertain us all so ably.
I certainly came away inspired . . . .    :)

Average 54.94years of a total of 5000 years with 91 peoples ages and standard deviation was 14.something.
I incorrectly told Ian it was 57, I think, sorry.

Someone else did mention that only those of 60+ should install scaffold as then they'd never have to replace it themselves!

I'd like to say a massive thank you to all the presenters for taking the time to put together such a great collection of slide shows. Also thanks to Gary, Matt, Adrian, Andy, Beardy and Holly for their help and everyone else who mucked into help.

Again Matt and Gary for the technical help and equipment. Les W and Hidden Earth for the loan of the projector. Clapham village Hall for hosting us.

Look forward to the vast amount exploration to be reported in 2021! Thank you all for coming!
