Posting Photographs
« on: January 30, 2016, 08:32:49 pm »
There are two ways of posting a photograph on Ukcaving.

The first is best for larger or good quality images but they must already be hosted on the web somewhere, the second can be uploaded from your PC but must be small, low resolution images.

First way:   The image needs to already be on the web somewhere. If its a photo on your own pc - then you'll need to upload it to the web using a site such as flickr, photobucket etc.

Once its up on the web, you then need to find the address (or URL) of the picture.

You can find this by right-clicking the picture and clicking "copy image address" or highlight and 'copy' the URL in properties.

Then back in your UKcaving post,

You need to press the button which will give you two image tags - an 'open' tag and a 'close' tag.

Code: [Select]
[img][/img]
Then you paste the url of the picture between the tags.

eg
Code: [Select]
[img]http://flickr.blah.blah.blah.jpg[/img]
You can also resize the image by inserting width=??? after the first 'img', for example,

Code: [Select]
[img width=300]IMAGE URL[/img]

Second way: You can upload a photograph directly from your device.  Clip the 'Attachments and other options' located below the 'post reply' box.  This brings up an 'Attach - choose file' option, where you can find the desired photograph on your device.

Unfortunately the image size is limited to a maximum of 256KB so your photograph must be resized before trying to post it.  There is also a limit to 4 photographs per post at a maximum total of 512KB.  The photo is an attachment and doesn't appear in preview.

The photograph will be a small thumbnail like this which will expand once clicked.

Nope, just the three tick boxes:

Notify me of replies.
Return to this topic.
Don't use smileys.

The attachments and other options text acts as a toggle with a + or - icon when to be expanded or reduced, below this is the text "shortcuts: hit shift+alt+s to submit/post or shift+alt+p to preview "

No sign of an attach option

Hi all,

Attachment box should appear underneath those checkboxes (see image). Tested on Firefox v44 on Mac and works OK.

Please could you check your version of Firefox and let me know.

Thanks,

It doesn't work for me on Safari Version 9.0.3.
I agree with Mark, it's got to be to do with permissions - admins can do it, the rest of us can't.

I have tried to post a photograph but unfortunately I can get it to work -

I am using IE 11 and the latest version of Flickr - I have copied the URL - see below -

https://www.flickr.com/photos/60888452@N00/24182003863/

When I look at it in the Preview mode (before Posting) all that appears is a white cross on a black square background - what am I doing incorrectly?

Thanks

I really cant see the problem with Photobucket. I dont like anything that degrades or reduces the image. Links are messy. I dont try to follow UKC on a mobile phone if you do just read the text and look at decent photo files on a pc.

It's a problem with Flickr  - there are several different url type things in there which look like the one you need, but only one of them is the right one.
This is what you're looking for, something of this form. The _b (or whatever letter) gives the size of the image.

To use a picture from flickr - Forget about being fancy and outsmarting the system.

Press the share in the bottom right - choose BB Code and select the size to share (medium or small will do) and past the genrated link into your post

1) this gives a small bandwidth image in the thread that is clickable to see the full version
2) this is in line with flickr terms and conditions (Important for posts by the forum owners) - They have the opportunity to earn revenue from any advertising when someone view the full size image on flickr

I did make a photoguide but hosted the images on my own server and it all crashed before I made a backup :-(

Bograt - I've lost the thread of this thread...

So, what did you do to get the above pic here?
If it was in dropbox, I assume you Shared with public, then put the generated link URL into an IMG tag pair ?
Or is there more to it ?

Thanks

Edit: Ah, no, I get it now, it's in Attachment Options.  But then what....

Just type something into the reply box (a couple of dots should be enough), then select your pic. into the attachment box & post it. I browsed a memory stick for this one.
As I already mentioned it unfortunately doesn't show in preview, but comes up when the message is posted. -- simples :)

Links to content on Google Drive seem to be causing a problem at the moment. From a brief read, it looks like URLs to download content on drive are short lived, so they won't work for long at all. This might be avoided by using the link generated when you select "share content" or similar.

To explain lager photo above, a note from Q I received recently:

'I have increased the photo upload size to 1Mb and allowed 10 images per post. I’ve also increased the thumbnail size to 600px so they look much la(r)ger :) '

The photo situation on the forum may not be perfect, however hopefully this has helped, cheers, Pegasus  ;D
