Any support for Therion beginners?

Hello, new to this. I'm getting started in surveying and using SexyTopo to gather data from a distox2. When I export the files in Therion format I get an error message every time after pressing f9. Clearly I'm doing something consistently dumb. Any ideas?

Hello

There is lots of support out there, I would suggest the mailing list, which most people using therion tend to use

It is a very friendly group and covers all levels from beginner to really technical changes.

You will need to give a bit more detail if you would like a useful answer,
things like what the error is, better still put the data somewhere people can get at the files, then people can try to run it and fix it.

You could always use the cave registry

Where are you based Relict? Which caving region do you call “home”?

Hi, i'm Tom Thompson from the CPC. Digging in the east of north Yorkshire on the Stump Cross inlier. I presented at the Northern Exploreres forum and wilted when I saw how everyone has great surveys and mine were pencilled on the back of a fag packet! My co conspirator Alan Weight has great experience of trad survey technique and decided to join me in this adventure. He has a disto X2 on loan from the Ario Caves Project and I got a rugged tablet and we started. I have pre ordered a Sap 5 (or will it be Sap 6?) .
I tried to persuade the club to get a Bric5 but was kicked into the long grass. It would be great to see you at our site, we have a number of projects mainly aimed at finding some streamway downstream of the stump cross system. It's all fully permitted with landowners and NE. Alan and I agreed we could do with some mentoring on the software and we were hoping someone would pop up. We are improving weekly with the hardware but again, an experienced eye would be great. We dig on Wednesdays, 10-3, meet 0940 at the grass triangle, north side of Grassington to Pateley Bridge road 100 m west of Stump show cave. We survey on Saturday or by arrangements same time same place. If you had a date that works for you let me know. Thank you for the advice, I'll follow this up today. Best wishes, Tom

Hi Tom,

I’ve never stayed at CPC, more than happy to come up and run a quick course for you and Alan. I’ve actually got two weekends with nothing planned 12-14th and 19-21st may, if you want you can pick one and I’ll see about coming up.
We could skip some of the pda/phone stuff and go straight in for the geeky stuff.

Let me know.

Hi Alastair, many thanks. I'm available on 13 and 14 may and I've msgd Alan for his take. If Alan's ok we can check with the cottage warden to make sure there's no clash. Evening of 12th is committee meeting and they overtake the place. I'll reply later, but you will probably get an email from John Cordingley linking us on email.

Hi Alastair, Alan could only make the Saturday. After that it would be late in June sometime, unless we/ I came to Derbyshire.

Hi Tom,

I'm based in Lancaster. I learnt therion the hard way, by myself over too many green-screen hours! I have mainly used it for taking traditional survey data (mainly gathered diving) and drawing it up in therion. I'm not an expert on the in-cave digital stuff but have lots of experience of every possible compile error therion can throw at you. I'd be happy to help with any debugging or advice on formatting and getting the survey to look exactly how you would like it to.

There's big advantages to using therion on a developing project where you are continuously adding, and particularly correcting, data. Getting it to produce the finished product direct from therion will save huge amounts of time over importing it into another package for final formatting. The initial time spent learning how to do that will pay dividends later.

Hi Steve, thanks for that. I agree, when I discovered Therion i guessed it might be the answer for our project which will involve a lot of stitching together of bits of survey data. Alan has now made progress with getting our data to load. I guess I was anticipating getting stuck into learning it, but frustratingly stymied every time I tried to load our data. I think it's maybe a bug connected with the export from SexyTopo, as Alan has been able to hashtag certain lines of code, so they are not read and then the rest compiles. It's good to know that there are people around who know the territory, as I'm sure we will need help in future!

Thank you to everyone who has offered help with Therion for Beginners! I've now got lots of leads to follow up and offers of mentoring to access.
