how did you get into caving

Started with Sunderland Caving Club in 1978 through John Grey who was the boyfriend of my climbing mate Martin Smith’s sister Leigh Smith. This rapidly developed in 1979 at Leeds University with ULSA plus the short-lived Darlington Outdoor Club in the early 80s. Also did a year with HUSS while...

    CDG NL 228 Jul 2023

Copies of both arrived today. Great to read about significant finds at Austwick Beck Head, Robinson Pot and Whirlpool Rising. Also of interest is the return to Redmire Pot - Birks Wood Cave. This is definitely ‘the one that got away’ from me despite a discrete reconnaissance of the top and...

    CDG NL 228 Jul 2023

I’ve tried to get access to the online NLs previously without success (there is a seemingly insurmountable access barrier for ex-members and I’m seemingly not allowed to rejoin as a now inactive ex-NS Sec/Treasurer) so I’ve had to stick to printed versions which I actually prefer anyway.

    Caving Hut Tea Towel

Greenclose pic now sadly out of date due to new ‘ski slope’ extension which could show on a second edition.

    CDG NL 228 Jul 2023

If cost is an issue, I would happily see an increase in subscription costs to support continued production of CDG NLs on paper and cover increased postage costs. At present, £15 per annum including postage is a good deal for subscribers at £3.75 per issue which I doubt covers production/postage...

    CDG newsletters going spare

I’d be interested in CDG NL 81 Oct 1986 if it is still available.

    Caving clubs in 1956

You have to join, or in my case rejoin, to get access to the online NLs. I used to have a full set on paper but had to create some shelf space by giving them away to a DS member.

    More cave for Jenga Pot

I see - I didn’t realise that the card payment option was via PayPal. I’ll try again at some point.

Using a smart phone as a slide scanner

As well as using the timer setting to avoid wobble, you can get cheap and effective Bluetooth shutter release gadgets for smartphones too.

    Arthur T Millet

Sad news indeed. Takes me back to Nov 1987 and what was probably my first trip in Daren Cilau. I tagged on to a Chelsea trip (including Arthur and Duncan Price) to enlarge the Micron to allow dry cavers easy access to the recent extensions beyond the upstream St David’s sump. Eventually it was...

    High water at Hull Pot

Great pic of Yordas. I bet Douk Gill was resurging impressively though if Hull Pot was full. Is anyone doing anything in Douk Gill these days?Access used to be an issue but in these more enlightened times…..? Both caves at Dock Gill deserve a modern look/approach.
