I worked near to Thwaites' brewery (pronounced locally as "Twaitses") when that happened. Most folk thought it was hilarious and many went out of their way to take photographs of it. A lot of my misspent youth involved drinking Thwaites' ales and I was quite upset when they closed it down. Many...

Dead easy; many thanks for the clear instructions. (y)
Richard Whitcobe's WWAA is really interesting. It's great that these back stories were written down before many of them pass out of living memory.
I wish someone would write an equivalent for the Dales, although it'd be a mammoth task. Perhaps it'd be a project better suited to a Wikipaedia...
Thanks - that's a relief - it's a phenomenally useful resource!
Could you give us the heads up on here when it's running again, so we know if any further zero readings are genuine?
Pretty sure it is Hull Pot - but by heck that's dry!
Here's a recent picture of the same spot shot from the surface, in more normal water conditions. The very different angle makes it look a bit different but if you look closely some features are the same on both images. The dry waterfall is...
Thanks - that information so far is already useful!

Steve does lot of surveying in French conditions (and the results of his team's...
That Rebecca Williams session looks potentially very interesting; wish I could be there.
It would be great if someone could post a summary of the conclusions on here afterwards?

To try to add a little value (hopefully) to George's helpful post above, just be aware that low water does not necessarily equal better visibility. Having spent the greater part of my life avidly studying visibility in Dales sumps, I'll try to explain.
A lot depends on time of year and...
