    Swinsto - Warning

You are probably right about spits in the 1999 incident. However during the Aug 2009 rescue (according to my logbook) the volume of water was too high for the team to ascend to the base of Slit Pot. The lights at the top of Slit were seen from the floor of Great Aven. That may have prompted the...

Bolts were placed on this pitch during a rescue of a casualty from below the Split Pitch in high water conditions on 18.07.1999. The casualty had abseiled on the wrong half of a doubled rope during a PT trip and fell about 15m or so, injuring both legs. The initial rescuers free climbed up under...

Finding Petzl serial codes on helmets

Looking at two of my Ecrin Rocs, on the oldest (2007) the number is etched into the outside of one of the plastic 'discs' that sits under your ear on the chin strap. The more recent helmet (2011) is on a sticker inside the shell.

valley ent. CRO A gear - exercise or call out ?

CRO keeps dedicated KMC Traverse ropes with knots pre-tied for ease of deployment; due to shrinkage etc they need to be reset every now and again. That happened on Thursday and the ropes will be taken out either Sunday or Monday, after they have 'settled' into their new configuration. Tom

Missing CRO gear in Swinsto Hole

I should perhaps have added that the bag is a Dragon special with a single long shoulder strap + side handles, and is marked up as a CRO Rigging Kit, and all the gear has either yellow paint or yellow tape on it. Tom

Missing CRO gear in Swinsto Hole

During the recent rescue in Swinsto Hole CRO had to leave ropes and other rigging equipment in situ due to the high water levels. Most of this was successfully retrieved on Thursday evening after the weather had improved. However we are still missing one orange tackle bag containing gri gris...

    Cave rescue

Most problems occur when the caller dials 999 and asks for 'Cave Rescue'. Despite what the telephone directories say the 999 call centres seem unable to handle this and will frequently misroute calls, often putting you through to the coastguard or fire and rescue services. In the UK to call...

Work at Height (Amendment) Regs 2007

Very difficult to respond to anonymous people but I get the impression that there is a strong 'industrial rope access' background present in the lifeonaline posts. I may be wrong... However I stand by what I have said and add a further quote from the draft HSE guidelines: '1. Small providers...

    Vespers Pot

I can confirm that Vespers is currently 'P' bolted to and including the 3rd (12m) pitch. Through the narrow slot leading to the 4th pitch there is an old bolt with a Troll? alloy hanger, and from there on its spits. The single spit rebelay on the 5th pitch is unusable but the rest are...
