40 years since Dave Anderson's death on a cave rescue

Some forum members will recall this. I certainly do as I was also on the call out that night. I well remember how devastated everyone was.

I recall that night. Several of the LUSS team I was with, were in the Dales that evening. Many of us knew Dave and were deeply shocked and saddened. RIP.

I remember that night only too well, being called out in the pissing rain; Dave was a friend . . . But why is tragic in inverted commas? It really was a tragedy.

I think it's just a quote (they are quoting someone when they use the word 'tragic' but not the rest of the headline)

As per Andrew (so a journalist who actually knows how to write): "Distancing: The writer uses the marks to showcase that the word "tragic" belongs to someone else (a source)"

I think they also do it to make it standout from the rest of the headline - making readers want to find out more
