A real treat for riggers

Anyone following our thread on the reopening of North End Pot will have heard me mention the second pitch into St Georges Hall. See thread https://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?threads/new-work-at-north-end-pot.33118/
The pitch had been left rigged for a long time, possibly since the original exploration in the 1980s. I suspect the through bolt was a much later edition though. My guess is that the tip broke off the drill bit and the threaded end was just hammered into the hole. Whatever happened it is quite a novel placement. The Y hang fixings are just old and showing signs of mixed metal corrosion. After a considered risk assessment we descended the rope without issue although I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. We await new resin anchors. Thoughts?

Thoughts? I’d love to do a pull test on those snap gates! Also why does the thru bolt look like it’s been put in the wrong way round? Aside from sticking out a mile.

It has been put in the wrong way round. I'll try and save the snap gates for you..

If Loki doesn't have the kit to break those krabs then you are welcome to send them my way and I can film the results. Happy to cover the postage costs or drop them at SpanSet next time you or Jane are there. My rig can easily handle breaking those.

Is that wrong-way-round bolt an 8mm throughbolt screwed into a spit?
If so, I would probably trust that anchor more than the rest (as it's on a nice rusty maillon without so much obvious corrosion on the hanger, not a heavily-corroded aluminum carabiner with fuzzy hangers)...

A pull test on the backwards through-bolt would be interesting. Don't think I would have abbed off it personally though.

Well, somebody must be able to tell how old the rope is from the colours...

P. Morgan's report & Northern cave club may be worth reading:

Very similar colouring, if not the same, to this 2001Troll rope
Edit: This rope has not been used underground hence its clean condition. He found it whilst clearing the garage and is solely used for practicing knot tying :)
