Access to Aberllyn Zinc Mine is possible via privately owned land adjacent to a cottage. Ownership of the cottage changed a few years ago, and the current owner occupies the property more frequently than the previous owners did, particularly during the summer months.
A few local mine explorers have recently had further discussions with the owner regarding access arrangements and, following a recent visit underground with him, the following points were requested in order to help maintain continued access to the mine.
The owner is not opposed to mine explorers accessing the mine via his land; however, continued access is dependent upon a few important considerations.
He asks that anyone accessing the mine does so discreetly, walking directly past the cottage and front door rather than creating an obvious path from the gate to the mine itself. If he is present, please make yourself known to him.
If met, the owner may provide his mobile number and ask visitors to message him when visiting again. He is keen to be aware of those using the mine but understandably does not wish for his number to be shared on public forums.
He also requests that underground party sizes remain reasonable and are not excessive.
Please avoid visiting the lower levels of the mine, as accessing some areas has previously been known to pollute the stream running past a nearby campsite.
As with all access arrangements, this remains a sensitive situation. Please respect the owner’s requests so that continued access can be maintained.
