AI Book Destruction

AI, the gift that just keeps on giving. It seems that the AI companies are buying up books on a large scale, scanning them to feed their infernal machines and destroying them in the process. So a person's work is being slurped up whether they like it or not and the 'service' then resold back to punters. How nice!

Secondhand book sales are booming. Is it because of AI?

Booksellers are reporting mysterious bulk orders. It's thought the books are being used to train AI - and ending up pulped.

Presumably when the courier turns up to collect the books and they aren't quite packed yet he looks around and says, "I'll be back."

Not mentioned in the BBC article linked, but wasn't there a US court ruling that meant if they used the scanned book to generate a model (training) and retained the physical copy they'd be copying it and in breach of copyright but if they destroy the book they were converting it. I'm sure there's some stupid court ruling that actually compels then to destroy the books?
