AI Caving Songs

'I' created these two songs using a couple of different IA apps. Each took a few minutes only. It's the first time I've used AI and I know it uses a lot of water and power resources but I'm hardly likely to become a regular user.

For the first one, I asked something along the lines of 'Creat a song about a caver loosing his wellies in his favourite cave in Wales.' The app came up with OFD! The pronunciation isn't great in places - caver, for example. I've probably heard just as poor pronunciation of some of the Welsh words from, you know actual real people! 🙂

For the second song, I simply asked the app to 'Creat a rap song about Ogof Craig A Ffynnon.'

One app created the lyrics and I then copied those into another app to creat the song. You can specify things like genre/style, a particular voice, tempo etc. I used the same app for both but, while 'caver' came out the same way, it got 'ffynnon' much better in the second song.

I couldn't upload MP3 files to the forum so here are links to the songs in the Suno app. I hope they work.

Here are the lyrics.

Lost My Wellies Down OFD by Lateral Thrutch

[Verse 1]
Down in Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, where the limestone breathes
I've walked these narrow passages since I was seventeen
My wellies know each puddle, every twist and turn
But the cave's got hungry tonight, and there's lessons to be learned

Carbide lamp is flickering, shadows dance on stone
Been coming here for twenty years, this place feels like home
But the mud's particularly thick where the water seeps
And my faithful rubber boots have found their final sleep

[Chorus]
Lost my wellies in the darkness
Left them somewhere in the deep
Now I'm walking home in socks, love
Through the Welsh hills, cold and steep
All those Sunday morning journeys
Down the holes where few men go
Now my wellies guard the secrets
That only cavers know

[Verse 2]
Started out at sunrise with my caving pack
Headlamp bright and spirit high, thought I'd be right back
But the squeeze got tighter, and the passage dropped
When I pulled my foot up next, my boot just never stopped

Tried to fish them out with rope, called to Dave and Sue
But the cave had claimed its trophy, nothing we could do
Twenty quid at Mountain Warehouse, that's what they cost
But you can't replace the memories, now forever lost

[Chorus]
Lost my wellies in the darkness
Left them somewhere in the deep
Now I'm walking home in socks, love
Through the Welsh hills, cold and steep
All those Sunday morning journeys
Down the holes where few men go
Now my wellies guard the secrets
That only cavers know

[Bridge]
In the local pub they're laughing
At the fool who lost his shoes
But down below in chambers dark
They're paying their dues
Every cavers got a story
Of the kit that got away
But my wellies found their calling
In the depths of Cymru's clay

[Verse 3]
Next week I'll buy another pair, lace them up tight
But I'll think about my old ones in the endless night
Standing sentinel in silence where the water flows
In my favourite cave in Wales, where nobody goes

[Final Chorus]
Lost my wellies in the darkness
Left them somewhere in the deep
Now I'm walking home in socks, love
Through the Welsh hills, cold and steep
All those Sunday morning journeys
Down the holes where few men go
Now my wellies guard the secrets
That only cavers know
Yeah, my wellies guard the secrets
That only cavers know

[Outro]
Down in Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, where the limestone breathes
My wellies wait in darkness, underneath the leaves

OCAF Dreamin by Lateral Thrutch

**Verse 1:**
Down in Wales where the limestone's deep,
Craig A Ffynnon where the waters seep,
Helmet on, lights burning bright,
Diving into eternal night.

Squeeze through passages narrow and tight,
Underground rivers, what a sight,
Calcite formations hanging down,
In this subterranean crown.

**Chorus:**
Ogof Craig A Ffynnon, going underground,
Where the darkness echoes with that dripping sound,
Cavers unite in the belly of the earth,
Finding beauty in the stone's rebirth.

**Verse 2:**
Crawling through the muddy maze,
Lost in limestone's ancient days,
Stal and flow, the cave's artwork,
Every chamber tells of earth's hard work.

Welsh mountains hide these secrets well,
Stories that the rocks can tell,
Millions of years carved this space,
Nature's underground embrace.

**Chorus:**
Ogof Craig A Ffynnon, going underground,
Where the darkness echoes with that dripping sound,
Cavers unite in the belly of the earth,
Finding beauty in the stone's rebirth.

**Bridge:**
Respect the cave, leave no trace,
Preserve this wild and sacred space,
For future cavers yet to come,
Till the earth and sky are one.

**Outro:**
When you surface, see the light,
Remember what you found tonight,
Craig A Ffynnon's mystery deep,
Underground secrets that we keep.

Well done. AI is getting better very fast. The second song even has trace of a Welsh accent in the singing.

But I'm not convinced by the pronunciation of Ddu.

I created another song especially for today's trip to Slaughter Stream Cave/Wet Sink, this time with a heavy metal slant. We blasted it out in the car on the way there, to get in the mood!

Also played it to Falkland and Alex at the entrance. Sorry but we couldn't remember which FB group you said to post it to. Thanks for showing us where the entrance is guys, I'm sure we would have found it eventually! A problem that sometimes crops up when you haven't been somewhere for twenty odd years! We visited your dig at Flowchoke. Very impressive and best of luck with the connection.

Bring your Daughter to the Slaughter ... Stream Cave (also known as Wet Sink)

Lyrics

## Verse 1
In the Wye Valley where the ancient oaks grow
Lies a secret that few will ever know
Through the Forest of Dean where the miners once came
Slaughter Stream Cave whispers its name

Down the fixed ladders, two pitches deep
Where sporting streamways their secrets keep
Sandy crawls and fossil passages wait
In this limestone world beneath England's gate

## Chorus
Slaughter Stream Cave, also known as Wet Sink
Where archaeology and adventure link
Beneath the Forest of Dean so green
The strangest sights you've ever seen

From the Wye Valley down to the underground stream
Living fossil passages like an ancient dream

## Verse 2
Animal bones found in unusual places
Tell of entrances lost through time's traces
Historic bones and archaeological finds
In the darkness of these limestone mines

Calcite decorations gleam here and there
Through oxbows and passages carved with such care
The streamway flows where it's flowed before
Through this underground world of ancient lore

## Chorus
Slaughter Stream Cave, also known as Wet Sink
Where archaeology and adventure link
Beneath the Forest of Dean so green
The strangest sights you've ever seen

From the Wye Valley down to the underground stream
Living fossil passages like an ancient dream

## Bridge
Where Free Miners once worked the coal seams above
Now cavers explore what the earth's carved with love
Rock formations unusual and strange
In passages narrow and chambers that change

Twenty four kilometres they hope to find
When Redhouse Lane connections align
But access restricted, permission required
For this wonder that leaves souls inspired

## Final Chorus
Slaughter Stream Cave, beneath English ground
Where history and mystery both can be found
In the Forest of Dean where the Wye Valley flows
Ancient secrets that nobody knows

Through sporting streamways and fossil halls
Where the voice of deep England forever calls

## Outro
So remember the cave when you walk through the Dean
The greatest adventure you've never seen
Slaughter Stream Cave, Wet Sink below
Where only the bravest cavers will go

Wonderful stuff. Some of you may know that Natural Resources Wales has been trying to put together a case that specifically cavers going along a woodland path to a cave entrance will trample on a particular species of ferns, the only one mentioned in the local SSSI citation, and so caving would have to be stopped while the said ferns are unfurled into the air. However, the ferns in question don't grow on woodland paths, and they're not a legally protected species: being described by Kew Science as 'common' and found all the way from Anchorage to Vladivostok [I paraphrase]. So here we go, not AI, and with apologies to Wordsworth:

I wandered lonely as a cave
Through quiet vales, by gentle burns,
When all at once I saw them wave,
A host of Brittle Bladder Ferns
Amongst the moss, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

I have had a go at rewriting the other verses too, but the results are not suitable for sharing here!

Well, I hope this is a bit of an experiment on the dark side of AI to show how bad it is.
If not it is thoroughly disgusting, and Huge should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. You didn't create them, other people's stolen work did.
As most people say: 'If you can't be bothered to write it, I can't be bothered to read it.'
Let's knock the horrible AI stuff on the head and go back to real artistry.

I'm glad I never heard any of the stolen work either. Fucking awful, all of it. Please don't do any more experiments - it really is just a waste of valuable resources, including my time.

The problem is that a lot of what we regard as artworks, for example the Daffodils poem or innovative music or a creative style of painting or a particular style of public speaking, is to some extent formulaic, although personal and individualistic. Thus it is amenable to pattern-matching algorithms fuelled by exemplars drawn in bulk from the web - so a gift to generative AI or indeed anyone that wants to parody or merely imitate it. Depressing to think that we are all so much more predictable than we might care to imagine.

Wow! 😂 I was expecting a post about AI to possibly produce a debate but not a personal attack.

Yes, it was an experiment. No, I'm not in any way ashamed of myself. I don't consider that I created these songs, that's exactly why I put 'I' in quotes. I was inspired by the AI generated group and album that recently topped the streaming charts and a YouTube video by a music producer who showed how easy it was to produce this crap. I was interested in discovering what AI would dig up about a niche subject like caving and even individual caves. It surprised me that it came up with Ogof Ffynnon Ddu on it's own and even more so about the looked for connection between Slaughter Stream Cave and Redhouse Lane Swallet.

I'm a late 50s tech luddite, who's never used AI before but am concerned with the affect it might (probably will) have on the world. I don't think 'my' three little songs will make any difference to that or to anyone. There's the worry that AI will take over certain tasks and take peoples' jobs. Music has become an industry, churning out the sort of formulaic crap that has dominated the charts for years. Maybe AI will take over that role, removing the chaff from the music industry, the sort of people with a MacBook and a keyboard or two in their 'studios'. Interesting that you and pwhole use the word stolen. Who's fault is it that certain music has become so samey, that AI can learn the formula and come up with music you consider stolen and I can hardly tell the difference from a lot of what's produced by 'real' people these days. I think there'll always be a place for talented, innovative artists.

Picking up on one of Stuart's points, remember the case where an ex manager of the Rolling Stones won a lawsuit against The Verve for using a sample of an orchestral version of The Last Time, in their song Bittersweet Symphony. Keith Richards, of course, admitted that The Last Time was based on an earlier song by another artist!

ZombieCake, you come across like the song about loosing your wellies in a cave, overly righteous. Maybe you should stick to exclusively making posts on the best song about this, or the best song about that, on a caving forum.

I decided that what this thread needed was a song to calm things down a bit

---

**[Intro]**

**[Verse]**
Well Huge just wanted to have some fun
Made a silly song and then said done
"Lost My Wellies Down OFD"
Just a harmless melody

But the forum erupted like a cave-in
Comments flying, tempers ragin'
What started simple, what started sweet
Started a flamewar beneath our feet

**[Chorus]**
Remember back in 2025
What a time to be alive
Back when cavers lost their mind
Over art that made them angry blind
AI songs to sing and hum
So simple, so much fun
What a time to be alive
Let's go back to 2025

**[Verse]**
First came ZombieCake with righteous fury
"Stolen work!" they cried to the jury
"Thoroughly disgusting!" was their plea
"You should be ashamed!" for all to see
"Other people's stolen work!" they screamed
While Huge just sat there, dazed and dreamed
Of silly song ideas realised
How did it all get so polarised?

**[Chorus]**
Remember back in 2025
What a time to be alive
Back when cavers lost their mind
Over art that made them angry blind
AI songs to sing and hum
So simple, so much fun
What a time to be alive
Let's go back to 2025

**[Verse]**
Then pwhole joined the angry brigade
"Fucking awful!" their tirade
"Waste of resources!" they declared
"And my precious time!" they glared
The Welsh cave song that took five minutes
Had them raging at the limits
Ogof Craig a Ffynnon's fame
Took a place in their hall of shame

**[Solo]**

**[Verse]**
"Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter Stream"
Became their apocalyptic meme
"You're encouraging tourists!" they screamed
"They'll bring their phones and LED beams!"
"Soon they'll want selfie sticks down there!"
"And portable camping chairs!"
"Bluetooth speakers in the squeeze!"
"And Instagram stories like a disease!"

**[Chorus]**
Remember back in 2025
What a time to be alive
Back when cavers lost their mind
Over art that made them angry blind
AI songs to sing and hum
So simple, so much fun
What a time to be alive
Let's go back to 2025

**[Outro]**
So remember when you're down below
In passages where few men go
The greatest danger that you'll find
Isn't cave-ins... it's mankind

Well I must join the debate. I went a bit further in that ChatGPT wrote the song and then offered to choreograph it. It is a paen to the MCRA and has the required instructions. It is quite amusing. I would love to see it performed.

Having looked at the songs AI produced I think my niche at writing caving songs is safe.

I've had a lot of chatgpt emails and reports sent my way recently and I find them so damn tiring to read. I really don't get why people think it's such an innovation, it feels like 3D cinema - all the rage for 2 years but because it's nauseous to look at it isn't the next big thing.

I would agree with Huge though that it is interesting to see what is out there and I can definitely see some of my work in them.

But then perhaps I'm a touch formulaic as a parody writer

Blimey, every day is a school day - i hadn't realised you could produce a song via AI.

Am recently retired, however wrote a lot of copy/content when working in marketing. Ditto various reports. Began running my work through AI out if interest (know your enemy 🤣) and yes indeed, ChatGPT would 'improve' on some of what I had written. Trouble I found was the reports in particular lost 'my voice' and read too perfectly, I could tell they were AI so sent in my original work with just one word altered as AI had come up with what I thought was a better one.

As much of the copy I wrote for marketing was on new products, AI couldnt help much as there was nothing for it to reference already 'out there'.

I liked nearlywhite's post above regarding 3d etc and tend to agree.

I will now be on the look out for AI music now that I know such a thing exists. Great for a bit of fun, hopefully it will stay as just that. Thanks for this thread 🙂

Well, if you want to hear lots more generative copyright-free music, just pop down to your local supermarket and listen to the muzak.

The interesting legal point is Composer C creates tune T, Person P plagiarises it in some derivative way and gets sued by C for IP infringement. AI System S analyses and internalises T (along with the whole internet - which is what P partially did) and then serves variants of T to anyone in the world who cares to ask - and nothing bad happens.

Of course composers work in a generative way too as they have their style and various tricks they can't resist pulling. So it's not that difficult to write something Bach-like, or use the Mozart signature 'lick' 3-1-5-4-3-2-1-2-1 (the last 2 being a trill followed by a turn) in something of your own.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting what the supermarket is playing in any way aspires to be a Bach or Mozart sound-alike.

I suppose it's some comfort that AI can't make or discover a cave, or maybe you know better?

Some of you may be aware of Rick Beato who posts a lot of really insightful music stuff on his YouTube channels. I often can't understand the more technical issues but this is easy enough to follow, regarding the new country rock 'artist' Eli Mercer

Know what you mean about 'perfect' as that was one of clues that alerted me to the fact that when I put a contribution to Belfry Bulletin through ChatGPT to correct tenses the AI started making things up. The other thing was that there no accompanying photos of some of the caves in the text. The AI came clean immediately when challenged which is good news I suppose.
