A Mother’s Day caving trip

By Lily Patrick aged 3 1/2 years old
My personal carers and snack carriers:

Mummy (Laura Patrick)
Daddy (Rich Hunt)
Nanny (Lin Patrick)
Grumpy Gramps (Ian Patrick)

Mummy asked if I wanted to go caving again with Nanny and Grumpy Gramps. But this time we didn’t need my floaty boat, we were using a rope. I like wearing my harness and swinging on ropes, Mummy and Daddy take me to Kendal climbing wall sometimes.
We met Nanny and Gramps in a bumpy lane surrounded by fields and lots of sheep. After the grown ups finished their “medicine” (coffee) Mummy dressed me up in lots of warm cosy clothes and put my harness on. The grown ups all had harnesses with shiny bits of metal attached.

Gramps had bought me my very own bright pink caving bag, we put some sweets in it and I wanted some rope too, I was given the “rescue rope”. Gramps would regret giving me this bag as I wouldn’t put it down and it kept getting in the way 😂😂.
Up the hill we went, me been carried in my backpack by Daddy, we counted sheep all the way.
We went into the cave following a stream, Gramps did his best to keep me dry, I tried my best to get wet.
After some crawling and climbing I had a rope fixed to me and I was lowered down a small drop. At the bottom of that Daddy and Nanny gave me some hot chocolate whilst Mummy and Gramps went to fix some ropes on the BIG drop ready for my arrival. Gramps fixed a rope on me and Mummy fixed herself to another rope. After some photos we began to go down the big hole together, this was fun fun fun.
At the bottom we all got back together and went to look out of a big window at a big hole and waterfall. I had to have lots of photos taken.
Mummy, Nanny and Gramps climbed back up the rope whilst I had some sweets with Daddy (that photo shoot had taken it out of me.)
Another rope was attached to me and then as if by magic UP I went. Gramps and Nanny took me off that rope and moved me along another rope and then attached me to another rope and then UP again, this time Mummy was at the top.

After a juice break we headed out of the cave, however this time I could get as wet as I liked and I made the most of it, my wetsuit worked really well.

Everyone was tired and we all had a lay down on the grass before heading back to cars.

We then headed to my favourite cafe “Inglesport” where I had chicken nuggets and chips.
I enjoyed my first trip going down a cave on a rope, I don’t think it will my last.

In't it grand to see three generations of a family enjoying a potholing trip?

Bit like in Switzerland where you bump into several generations of the same family on the same rope heading up a mountain, or zooming down on planks.

Really good pictures too. (y)

Great write up and pictures @Ian P , it looks like Lily had a brilliant time!

What gloves does she use and are they any good? Looks like neoprene in the pictures, but I can't quite make out the writing/brand on them. Gloves for wet trips are the one item of kids kit that I have struggled to find. We generally use cycling gloves, but those ones Lily is using look much better.

Hi Pete

As per link Josh posted (although in Pink !!)
They are a touch big still at the moment and she puts some thin liner glove’s underneath. It took some trial and error by Mum to get something that worked.
As I’m sure you would agree, having them dressed well really helps. 👍
