The Canal and River Trust have a digger similar to this to rescue the two narrowboats stuck in the collapse on the Llangollen Canal.

Amazing machine, amazing driving.

For some reason they are often called a spider diggers/excavators.
Can't imagine why.

Me too. Perhaps it didn't go well. I guess the potential for overturning must be non-zero, so I was surprised not to see any backup ready to get the driver out if necessary, eg, rope access in place. Maybe they had a helicopter on standby.

I notice a similar type of digger was used at the Shropshire canal boat recovery saga yesterday.
Not such a dramatic descent though...
