An East Kingsdale project…

What was the original depth of Thunder Hole and how much further do you think it is to breakthrough to Brown Hill?

I’ll update the dig thread after tomorrow trip but… @Badlad now about 15m (of which that last meter or so I can see down but too small)

Small stones and gravel now pour down the “floor” and land with a splash so presumably rather than coming in directly on top of the aven. Not unexpected tho really.

Tricky to guesstimate separation distances as the aven which includes the big pitch hasn’t been surveyed right up into the roof but I’d guess at between 5-10m. Hopefully we are about to intercept a short bit of horizontal passage which will account for a bit of that.

I believe that this was first dug by Harry Long and Mike Clark in 1969, who were spurred on by the sound of water. It was referred to as Unnamed Hole No. 8, in the 1973 LUSS 3 description of East Kingsdale, when it was 20' deep.
Yes I think you’re right. But… I suspect they never got to quite 20 feet as even with their rubble pulled back out it took some fairly vigourous capping to get there.
When I get depressed I look back at the photos of “before” and “now” and remind myself an awful lot of rock has been shifted mostly with chisels and caps! A labour of love…..
We have sent someone to the “Par Dessus” route in brown hill who was gently showered in gravel while capping was going quite some metres ago, so hopefull that we aren’t a million miles off!

I may have to have a look down P.A.G. Pot at some point with more modern “techniques” that Harry Ian and Mike had readily available at some point too…

As promised…
A useful session today. Resisting the temptation to “rabbit hole” much rock was removed from the side at the bottom of the shaft to make more room to work and some long holes and loud noises applied there also, hopefully with useful results.
Andy Tharratt and myself down the hole, which for once was bone dry which made everything much more appealing and Lugger and Alan Speight on surface duties with the dog!
Attached is a “before and after” snap of the bottom of the shaft and a view up to the surface, and a happy dog and @JAA pleased with themselves 😂

A point I haven’t mentioned yet and a VERY important one is that all this exploration was only possible thanks to a grant from the @CNCC Exploration fund!
There will be more about that in print when it eventually breaks through (god willing etc) but the funds donation to help with materials has made a huge difference!

Much rock redistributed today to improve the working area to about 2m x 1m at the bottom.
A party (suitably warned) were in Brown Hill and the sounds of digging activity were distinctly audible coming from the ceiling about the big pitch apparently, hammering etc.
And if nothing else the dog enjoyed it.
As ever all welcome to join in! Feel free to PM me!
