Fellow cavers,

I am pleased to announce the public unveiling of a new website providing a searchable version of the entire Mendip Cave Registry database of Sites of Spelaeological Interest, available at the following location:

http://www.mcra.org.uk/registry

The online database contains entries for almost 1,800 sites across Mendip and the surrounding areas, including details such as length, depth, hydrology and alternate names. At the moment the website offers searches by both name and location, with interactive Google and Ordnance Survey mapping used to display geographic search results.

The site is still a work in progress, with plans to enhance it over the coming months with the addition of more advanced search options, site photos etc.

I welcome your comments and suggestions!

Great site. I like it.

One suggestion for the longer term would be to have cave surveys on there too, overlain on the satellite images.......

That will require a hell of a lot of co-operation from the copyright holders of a hell of a lot of surveys. See a certain Welsh thread for details.

However, in the fullness of time I am sure that something along those lines will be done.

Wow it is amazing

I clicked on Weston-super-Mare where I grew up, and there are loads of spelaeological sites I never knew about.

Well done to all involved

It all looks very fine and useful.  Good work by those who have compiled it.  Just one niggle - this statement relating to Swildon's Hole is incorrect:

Notes: The farmer, Mr. Robin Main, has requested that novices do not enter the cave

This came up at CSCC some years ago.  This is NOT what the landowner has requested.  A more accurate interpretation of his concerns would read:

The farmer, Mr. Robin Main, has requested that novice groups should not use the case unless properly equipped.

I forwarded exactly the same a couple of days ago. But I used the email link on the site to send corrections.
