Any caving opportunities in June.

Hello!

My name is Adis, and I’ll be visiting the UK from the US between June 7th to the 21st. During my second week there, I’d love the opportunity to explore a cave and experience some of the UK’s underground!

I'm a member of the NSS in the U.S. and have primarily done horizontal caving. I’m hoping to connect with a local club or some fellow cavers who might be open to taking us out on a beginner's trip.

An important question, but the "best area" is very subjective.

For vertical caving, no doubt the Dales is the best region, but for horizontal caving the Dales really don't have anything more to offer than any of the other caving regions.

The reality is that for a visiting overseas caver, doing one or two trips in the UK, there are fantastic trips in every region, so the "best" will be the one that's not a 4 hour drive away.

"The Mendips" is the caving area you need, look on maps for a place called Wells (watch the film "Hot Fuzz" if you want to see what Wells looks like as it's filmed in and around Wells).

So you're asking about caving in the Mendips

From Bath, you are very close to the Mendips.

Despite what our northern friends think, Mendip caves are fantastic. Many are fairly short and ideal for an evening to trip, but if you want to spend all day caving, there are also plenty of options.

An absolute classic Mendip trip would be Swildon’s Hole, down to, or through Sump 1. This is a great trip for an evening and I'm sure you'll have no difficulty finding someone who is happy to take you.

The closest club is the Wessex Cave Club, which is a short walk from the cave and has changing facilities.

If you don't get another offer, I may be free on the Thursday evening that week, but I'll need to double check on lift-shares for kids activities as I'm on taxi duty 1 Thursday in 3.
