Attend the 2015 Gaping Gill Spring Winch Meet

The first winch meet of the year, which allows members of the public and non-cavers to descend into Gaping Gill, is scheduled to run over the Spring Bank Holiday week, May 23rd to May 29th.

The first winch meet of the year, which allows members of the public and non-cavers to descend into Gaping Gill, is scheduled to run over the spring bank week, May 23rd to May 29th.

Run by the Bradford Pothole Club for over 60 years, the winch lowers visitors from the slopes of Ingleborough down 100 metres (330 feet) through one of the deepest shafts in Britain and into the Main Chamber of the Gaping Gill, one of Britain?s longest and most complex cave systems.

Once inside, the Main Chamber is floodlit, affording a view not normally seen.

To make the descent, prospective adventurers must Park in Clapham village and walk the one and half hours to the entrance of Gaping Gill via the Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail and Ingleborough Show Cave.

Once at the entrance, a numbered tag can be purchased for ?15.00 to assign your spot in the descent queue. No pre-booking is possible.

Ascents are done by queuing for the next available winch.

Meanwhile, experienced cavers who would like to get into the cave under their own steam are able to use one of the other entrances to the cave.

A second winch meet, put on by the Craven Pothole Club, is scheduled for the end of August.

Im heading up in August but have a couple of questions is it possible to camp up near gaping gill? And are there plenty of people doing "sporting" trips into the cave that i can tag along with as i have no knowledge of the cave

Hijacked already....That will be the Craven meet, but the ground rules are similar.
Several entrances will be rigged and available for use by any caver (or, obviously, you can go in via the chair)(& Dihedral etc have some extra restrictions). You'll need to make yourself known at the booking tent, and pple will be happy to point you in the right direction.
The permit from the Estate restricts camping to CPC members / guests (I think), so you can't just camp on the 'Borough, but there are places to stay / camp not to far away.
It's a superb place...

Hi All,

For those who are interested the Bradford Pothole Club winch meet is now up and running and as always the BPC welcomes fellow cavers to our winch meet.

In addition to the winch which will be running Sat 23rd to Friday 29th May (winching stops at 12.00 on the 29th) we have also rigged some of the alternative ways into the system for SRT for use up to 5pm on Thursday 28th May

So far this includes:-
Bar Pot
Small Mammal
Wades (Flood Entrance)
Marilyn
Stream Passage pot

Can all visitors wishing to enter the system please come and sign in at the booking in tent prior to commencing any trips (and please remember to sign out before leaving!)

May I also remind visitors that:

Only competent cavers with suitable equipment and experience and who have BCA Insurance may access the alternative entrances into the Gaping Gill system.

Descents or ascents of routes landing in the Main Chamber (Main Shaft/ Dihedral/ Rat Hole, etc.) are not permitted.

Because full-time policing of the system and the rigging cannot be undertaken by the BPC all visitors who choose to use our equipment do so on the understanding that it is entirely at their own risk.

We also ask that all existing rigging should not be tampered with or left in an unsafe condition.

Anyone who wishes to use the winch to enter or exit the system must book in, pay the usual fee of ?15 and collect a numbered tag.
