Thanks for the replies, the caving Vs mine exploration you can put down to my unconscious bias as my own exploration is both (you can blame extended periods of time in Derbyshire and North Wales) and have a tendency to use cave rather than underground trips. It's a good point and one we'll try to take on board - I do get others to check these before they get sent out.

With regards to Huge's comment it is very fair, we just wanted a rough average and originally it was about 6 questions. The problem was each question didn't really get to the rough average answer and so we just ended up picking one. Would be really interested if people could suggest improvements to wording as that really does help.

Thanks to everyone so far for giving so much input, it will make for a good report!

Most of us I think ( well me at least...and I'm 99.9% mine explorer ) take "caving" in this context to be whatever we "do" underground or associated with it....caving, mine exploring, other underground exploration, quarries, socialising, club activities etc

Its only a snapshot in time so let's not criticise it too much  :)

I absolutely *hate* consumer surveys that I seem to get bombarded with every time I buy a packet of crisps or a light bulb or a washing machine or *anything* as they are merely marketing / spam tools... but what I do like is the "give your answer on a sliding scale of one to ten with one being SHITE and ten being EXCELLENT" type of answers.
Quick, flexible and very easy for the surveyor to collate large amounts of data very quickly and produce a bar chart / graph / venn diagram very quickly.
When all you want is a snapshot to produce a trend its the quickest way I reckon.

I would of liked to see a question along the lines of tick a box or multiple which you do . Caves ,mines etc and the survey was just for this, then you knew roughly the person that filled it in  and why they took part ,don?t no if this would of helped more ?

I come from a complicated path of starting out in what?s for some reason called urbex mine exploring more of along the lines of idiots I would call them now people who don?t understand the risks and do not take proper equipment, i purchased my bca originally for cal sites now I am glad to be a member of a amazing organisation , I am hoping to meet some new caver friends in the future, I met loads of very nice people on aditnow who have kept me alive in the dirty iron mines

Also I have brought some of my old skilful mine explorers on the correct path from the urbex world  and they also now purchase bca  :D

I hope they participate I little more than just "purchasing BCA" just to get them into certain places or thinking that they have their ar$$e$ covered...?

Chris I think Phil means to get young people more out and about as there are not many youngsters in our hobby ?

Tom and his pals are all young .

Post COVID my greatest difficulty in getting back to caving is being a care giver and not having the time or the fitness to get out much, and then mostly easy trips suitable for person I look after

Ref the last question of the survey.  It occurred to me that caving post covid might suffer a decline in interest similar to that which effected caving post Foot and Mouth.  Then there was a loss of impetus to cave in some quarters that resulted in some cavers packing it in for good.  I suspect a big effort to promote caving across all sectors is needed to breath some new blood into the sport and support for all those channels that bring folk in.
