Hi Pitlamp

DIM (direct individual member of BCA) refers to the way a member joins BCA.
The alternative is to join BCA via a club (or CIM - club individual member)

However DIMs could always (and still can) then choose which type of BCA membership suits them best. As can club members.
There are 4 types of BCA membership available - caving member, non-caving member, student member, under 18 member.

So you can join as a DIM but then be caving member, non-caving member, student member or U18 member!

The vast majority of DIMs join as caving members, but not all - this year we have 79 DIMs who are under 18 members!

I am sure you already know which type suits you best but I'll include some more info for anyone else reading this thread who might find it useful.

Caving membership: For any caver who is physically active within the caving scene, even if they don't go underground. Those who go underground in caves and mines, or who participate in surface walks, surface digs, or surface projects should join BCA as a caving member.

Non-caving membership: For members who wish to be socially involved in the caving scene or keep in touch with, and support the BCA. Members who wish to attend meetings and socials, but not participate in surface or underground trips and projects should join BCA as a non-caving member.

Student membership: BCA membership for full time undergraduate students. This is the same as caving membership, just offered at a discounted rate to encourage student caving.

Under 18: BCA membership for any member aged under 18 years of age on the 1st Jan 2026.
