So much fab info on here.

For me it's a good pair of wellies, good spec helmet and head torch and good hand held torch. Then another spare torch and a spare spare torch. Without light you are Freddie Hucked.

Apologies to digress the thread, but it looks like the OP bailed out from this thread ages ago anyway?
With Stinkys, what happened about ducks/sumps? especially the person who went first - sounds like a real pain (or test of character depending on perspective)

For big foreign expeditions they tended to use the type of lamp with a belt worn generator feeding the burner by a hose in a similar way to an Oldhams lamp. This was to enable long trips with underground camping in the days when dry batteries were short lived. Part of the kit was a small electric back up lamp for carbide changes and things like sumps, waterfalls etc. If you search for photos of earlier expeditions you will see most of the cavers wearing these lamps, especially the continental cavers.

I remember a trip down Giants Hole before the place was blown up, and you had to pass the Backwash Pool which, from memory, was a two–three meter crawl in a low passage with lots of water and limited airspace; scores of years later, I can remember passing carbide lights from hand to hand through this bit of unpleasantness.

It is a very dangerous profession where you have to study, for about a year. After that you have to know about minerals, the type of mining, the construction of special equipment and so on.
