Bob Jarman

Ah man, this is sad. I know Bob was an inspiration to caving in the area - and to his family too. I interviewed Bob for my Yorkshire's Three Peaks book in 2014... I think I have the original tapes somewhere. I couldn't print most of it! He had a way with words but was utterly genuine with it, a gentleman.

For those who never saw this when Ged Dodd filmed Bob in Ingleborough Cave about 13 years ago, it's worth watching. The story of the alligator involving "Chester" is entirely true. Ged & co. had been Happy Wanderers members in the early days and in 1956 they'd left graffiti on the cave roof near the Pool of Reflections. Bob had waited decades to tell them off and Ged captured the moment. (Note the mis-spelling of "Wanderers".) Bob was never very far from his pipe; it went everywhere with him.

He recounts the somewhat understated tale of diving to Lake Pluto with Bob Leakey in 1962 when they were caught by a flood and the sherpas ran away. Note the reference to the use of an AFLO. (Bob Jarman wrote about this trip in BPC Bulletin 3 [8] March / April 1962.) He was a hard caver in his day.

There is a mention near the end of a "Gordon" - that would be Gordon Nolan; it was Bob and Gordon who produced the very fine early 1960s survey of the whole of Ingleborough Cave. (The question is asked in the film if this referred to Gordon Batty; this isn't clearly answered, hence the clarification here.) Ged's short film has probably been flagged up on the forum in the past but I thought it was worth including the link once again in this topic:

It's likely that tributes will be prepared for Descent, the CDG Newsletter and the Bradford Pothole Club Newsletter in due course.

Thanks for posting about Bob's passing and for sharing the YouTube video. I worked at Ingleborough cave as a guide sporadically while at school and uni from 2003-2009. He was a pleasure to work for, incredibly considerate, and could brighten up a dreary Yorkshire afternoon with a tale any time! We'll miss you Bob!
