BOX MINE: NEW GATES 2005

Woodland grille = no idea.

I understand that Lady Hamilton's is to be closed off since the surrounding rocks are unstable; it therefore appears that this closure would effectively be "permanent".

I hope the grilles do not receive any attention from the Bolt Cropper Society or other such nefarious movements; it's one thing having the locking mechanism bypassed and another for the gates/grilles to be damaged but part of this project was a caveat stating that IF the grilles/locks are not respected there will be a review at which English Nature then have the option of making the place even more secure - e.g. blockwork and bat slots. Let's hope that it never comes to this and I'm sure it won't.

It is human nature to be alert to change and to comment about it but once the dust has settled most people wonder what all the fuss was about in the first place (especially since access remains possible).

Sorry slightly off topic but I have a full answer to this question.

What on earth is a "woodland grill"?
Its when you BBQ woodland creatures like squirrels and rabbits ;) (squirrels taste like chicken yum)

Looking forward to my 'key' - who is up for a string, litter picking trip once the gates are installed. Dont answer just yet.

Just revisited this very old thread...
Graham, did you run the book?
If so, who had "gates still on after 7 years..."

It seems improbable that they are still there, but it looks like there has been an outbreak of common sense amongst the "gate removal community". In no small part due to the relative ease of access that exists and also I assume to the education of the people that didn't seem to be able to work out how to acquire their own "key" or how to ask to borrow one from the Quarryman's Arms...

A lot of "local" explorers have worked very hard to keep this access system working

Les

Nobody placed a bet. This is an excellent situation & one which is worth bringing back to people's notice given the recent frenzy from the access at all costs brigade.

Just a quick query, How many bats were killed in Box mines as a result of completely open access??

I'm not aware of any being killed at all, let alone due to open access...
