Camborne School of Mines - Any recent experience or advice?

My younger brother (17), is hoping to do an undergraduate course at Camborne. He's going to an open day there this week.

If anyone has any recent experience or advice they'd be happy to share, please let me know.

Good reputation, good prospects for graduates. Three years in Falmouth or an over-crowded up-country city? That's an easy one! Mining Degree recently re-started after a hiatus, it's run differently from the previous three years full-time but it's attracting students and should be as desirable to employers as the previous offering. Other undergrad and post-grad courses continued while Mining took a short break.

I've done some projects with CSM and got on very well with the staff there. I don't know much about the course, but the folks I met were enthusiastic and motivated.

We hosted a party from CSM in Hucklow last year as part of the practical assignments for their course. They were well supported by staff who accompanied them to various locations in the Derbyshire orefield.

I have contact details for several of the course tutors out you would like them.

One thing to remember - Falmouth is bloody long-way from 'civilisation' Our eldest daughter did a degree in photography there and we worked out that if all of the flights could be aligned, from here in the middle of the Peak District it's actually quicker to get to Concordia University or McGill in Montreal than to Falmouth.

Most of my work is in EU shipyards, typically in and around Barcelona but I do sometimes have work in the main shipyard in Falmouth. Including being sat in Manchester Airport for 2 hours before the flight I can be sat with a fizzy lager in a central Barcelona bar at about the same time as I would be passing Tavistock in the van!

The way "civilisation" is these days, it sounds like Falmouth may have a lot going for it!

my mate did his exploratory mining degree there. He's now literally sitting on a gold mine down under... as a mining engineer.
