Everyone calls it Burntwood from the tree that got struck by lightning (now completely gone). There was a big white pile of garden lime nearby that local wags put signs upon advertising it as "xxxx's stash" with an upturned pair of wellies sticking out.
The junction is a notable accident black spot (I've witnessed a collision just waiting in traffic) like the Miners' Arms one that was realigned a couple of years ago. In this case a roundabout is being built. This is due to take 6 months as long as the contractors don't dig up a Roman Villa or some other remains (which wouldn't surprise me at all since there are barrows nearby and the fields a full of flint arrow heads).
Traffic is being diverted. I guess aggregate lorries from Moon's Hill are taking the A37 north from Beacon Batch to the A39 and then back on the B3135 at Green Ore. Locals are using the Old Frome Rd (passing the top of Thrupe Lane) to reach the A39 either rejoining the B3135 and coming out at the Mendip Inn or at Beacon Batch. Traffic has also increased on the OId Bristol Road from Wells passing the Hunters' and along Haydon Drove (which joins the A39 at a blind corner opposite Pen Hill mast). Some of these routes are quite narrow and/or have sharp bends.
