BLIND DESCENT / The quest to discover the deepest place on Earth by James M Tabor 2011 305 pp, 38 B&W photos,
This is another caving book, news of which has only just arrived in Cwmparc.??It is in two parts.??The first part describes Bill Stone's explorations in the vast Cheve Cave in Mexico.??In the second part, the legendary Ukrainian explorer Alexander Klimchouck?s adventures in the Krubera Cave in the breakaway region of Abkhazia in Georgia are delineated.??Having met Alexander twice, I read the second part first. Krubera Cave is named after Alexander Kruber (1871-1941), who initiated the study of karst science in Russia.??Kubera Cave, as well as being the deepest cave in the world, is also amongst the most difficult to negotiate.??Freezing temperatures, deep wet shafts and an inaccessible entrance, which is best reached by helicopter add to the problems. These are further complicated by a difficult political situation with border guards demanding extortionate bribes.??In Mexico the situation is only a little easier.??A warmer climate, caves that can be reached by car or donkey and, usually cooperative villagers.??
Both caves present their own problems for the explorer. Cheve is 47 F at the entrance and 50 F inside as against Krubera which is 32 F in summer and zero or below in winter. Both caves take weeks to explore with many underground camps.??The amount of equipment required is mind boggling needing many sherpa trips even before exploration can begin..?
Kubera has gone from 2016 m in 2010 to 2096 in 2014.??Perhaps a new book is called for.
?The author gives a very personal account of the two cavers? experiences.? ?Bill Stone, divorced and later with many girlfriends, the older he gets, the younger they become.??Alexander Klimchouck is a devoted family man, married with two children.??
