CNCC “New to Caving / Try caving” Day

A CNCC “New to caving / try caving day” hosted by The Craven Pothole Club.

12th February 2023

For anyone interested in taking up caving and would like an informative and hopefully enjoyable day. (Free of charge)

Please pass this information onto anyone you think may be interested.

Details and booking here:

I like the initiative, but where/how/and how wide spread is this being advertised outside of the caving community?
Some initial thoughts are:

• On this Forum.

•The Craven Pothole Club have a good “public facing” Facebook page due to the Gaping Gill winch.

• UK Climbing forum

• Local Facebook groups (“Settle Chat” etc)

• Flyers in suitable locations (Inglesport, Castleberg sport etc)

• Cavers helping to spread the word about the opportunity.

Hopefully we can get other clubs to host days and this will give people alternative dates that may suit them better.

Getting more opportunities onto the calendar would be nice before “pushing” the advertising.

Please feel free to share the opportunity anywhere you think suitable or let me know and I will ensure details are circulated.

An ongoing project of mine is to get a proper programme of try caving or ‘discover caving’ (I think was the name we settled on) days/weekends rolled out and advertised, with the view of expanding the reach of normal try caving weekends.

This has taken a major backseat for various reasons, none less than me moving and changing jobs, but it is something I still want to take forwards

Hi Josh

I assume this is a BCA “initiative”, if there is anything the CNCC can do to help, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thanks Ian, yup should’ve stated this is a BCA youth and development initiative, sounds like I’m stealing the credit above, been a team effort on the work so far!

Ian, How about flyers in tourist offices and national parks visitor centres? also outdoor shops and possibly cafes?
Hi cavingbiker

These are all great locations.
I guess what we need is to build up the number of events and then “host” them in a common location on the website.
A big “ publicity” drive for one day is not overly efficient, “signposting” to an ever evolving number of opportunities would be preferable.

I think a bit of “evolution” will be needed.

I've been rather snowed under with work and since I took over the newtocaving website on behalf of BCA Y&D and not done anything. But seeing this thread tonight poked me into action.
I have now added a page on it for Discover Caving Events - https://newtocaving.com/events.php - and added this CNCC one as an example.
Very much a work in progress, but will hopefully be able to act as a central reference for people looking to find such things.

For now it is a manual adding and deleting process. Just message me here with details of an introductory event you want adding (club, regional council, BCA) and I will do it when I get the chance.
If we end up getting lots of them (a nice problem) I'll have to think about a more streamlined way of doing it.
